Spider-Man: Far From Home both a prequel and sequel? Theory suggests an altered timeline

The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer debuted yesterday and, much like Ant-Man, left a nebulous thought to a possible alternate webslinging timeline. Clues suggest a different timeline when Peter Parker wasn’t snapped away.

Spider-Man: Far From Home created a stir online and the fishbowl headed Mysterio really got my attention. But I couldn’t help but to wonder about certain clues in the trailer that led me to think how can Peter Parker can exist after the events of Avengers: Infinity War.  After all, the movie chronologically releases shortly after Avengers: Endgame.

Peter’s passport in the trailer is missing his birth year, year issued, and expiry year. It made me wonder why would they blank that out. By the time we see Far From Home, will those years be visible to us on the big screen?

The Theory of Two Spider-Man Timelines

ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis did a nice rundown of the clues to a time travel occurrence between the two films. I think Marvel Studios cleverly did this with intent to keep things nebulous. I say kudos to them! I feel they even keep us entertained between movies by doing this. There’s a fun factor in trying to figure it all out, like a scavenger hunt.

Brandon goes on to mention on how Spider-Man is seen alive and well swinging in front of Avengers tower. He also theorizes the significance of the missing July Summer years on Peter’s passport which claims “is not an accident”.

"“The only explanation here is that Spider-Man is coming back to life and it will probably be in a brand new timeline created when Avengers: Endgame travels backward to end at a point in time prior to when it began. First of all, the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer intentionally removed the years from Peter Parker’s passport. We get July dates, but no year and that’s not an accident. It’s because telling which Summer this movie takes place would reveal whether its before or after Peter turned to dust.”"

When Is The Ant-Man?

There’s also the matter of Scott Lang who appeared in what is archived surveillance footage in the Endgame trailer. When Cap asks if this is old footage, all that Natasha/Black Widow mentions is that it’s at the front door of the Avengers complex. But the real question is, according to Brandon is “WHEN is the front door?”

The only time we’ve ever seen Ant-Man at that complex was when he took on Falcon in the first Ant-Man film. Lang was then later seen in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and The Wasp where he disappeared into the Quantum Realm. Just prior to his journey, Janet Van Dyne warned him to avoid the time vortexes. Then viola! He’s LAST seen in the Endgame trailer’s surveillance footage.

So it would seem that Marvel Studios may have planned out Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home carefully. They even went as far as to edit the trailers to be veiled in mystery. So this has fans talking.

Sony And Marvel Studios Heads Planned This Brilliantly

In an exclusive interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Sony head Amy Pascal, via Fandom in June of 2017, they mentioned how immediate the two flicks follow each other in quick succession. Pascal clarified the order of operation.

"“What I think we should focus on is this Spider-Man who started in Civil War and then has this movie [Homecoming], and then will be in the Avengers movie. And we are starting now the next one [Far From Home] which will start a few minutes after Avengers 4 wraps as a story.”"

This goes to show that way back when, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios were trying to get the timing right and it looks like they’ve hit the nail on the head when the Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer made their debut.

Witnessing Spider-Man’s New Timeline Change

I have theorized, if Marvel Studios pulls this off the way I think it will, we could experience some kind of overlap between the two films whilst watching them in order. If we see an alternate timeline where Peter Parker is alive and well in Europe, somewhere in Avengers: Endgame we may be witnessed to an event where Spider-Man will be alive via Captain America’s stated plan in the Avengers: Endgame trailer.

Since post-credit scenes are imperative to make the audience stick around for a while, I wouldn’t put it past Marvel Studios to surprise us with Peter Parker’s new altered timeline at the END of Endgame. If not that, then at the beginning of Far From Home. Which one could be anybody’s guess.

Nick Fury Replaces Tony Stark As Mentor?

Do you think in Spider-Man: Far From Home or Avengers: Endgame it will show Peter never encountering Tony Stark in Homecoming? Will they even go back that far in time? I get a sneaky suspicion that Nick Fury will be the one that will introduce him to the suit technology instead of Stark in the new timeline. Of course, Iron Man is mentioned in the trailer and Stark’s associate Happy Hogan makes an appearance, but this doesn’t mean Stark will have ever mentored him in the new timeline.
