The Passage recap: What supernatural abilities do the creatures possess?
By Sandy C.
Fox premiered an all-new episode of The Passage tonight, thickening the mystery of the vampire creatures.
Missed tonight’s episode of The Passage? Please note, huge spoilers are ahead for “You Owe Me A Unicorn” and previous episodes!
Without having read the books, here’s something we know for sure: The vampire creatures will eventually break out and cause a lot of death and destruction. We’ve seen it in the teaser trailers, and it’s also pretty obvious something huge will be going down. After all, do we really expect the creatures to remain in their cages? No, that never works out.
In episode 2, “You Owe Me A Unicorn,” all human test subjects are still safely locked up, but what are they planning? Viewers got a small tease about their abilities in the pilot episode last week. They seem to get into your head, but now we’ve learned there’s more to it than that.

As Brad (Mark Paul-Gosselaar) and Amy (Saniyya Sidney) continue their great escape, the medical facility is having issues of their own. The thing is, the doctors have no idea what the creatures are planning. Even we aren’t sure what’s going on!
The mystery begins with a man in Dr. Lear’s (Henry Ian Cusick) staff complaining about nightmares that feature Dr. Tim (Jamie McShane) intimidating him. Dr. Lear tells him it’s just cabin fever and shrugs it off.
Towards the end of the episode, however, their newest test subject, Anthony Carter (portrayed by McKinley Belcher III) has a very vivid dream. This is when learn know things are serious.
In the “dream,” Anthony walks in to a bar where Shauna (Brianne Howey) is waiting, with Dr. Tim Fanning as the bartender. Fanning offers Anthony a drink, but he refuses, knowing something strange is going on. The vampire duo tell Anthony he must still pay for the drink. When Anthony says he doesn’t have any money, they tell him he pays with himself and proceed to take one of Anthony’s teeth out.
Just what exactly are the supernatural abilities the vampire creatures possess? And what is their objective? Shauna tells Anthony everything will be okay as long as he listens to Fanning, so he’s clearly the one in control. He’s also not at all happy with Lear, telling Anthony not to trust his old friend.
Speaking of Dr. Lear, the episode leaves him in shock as Anthony passes on a message to him from Fanning. Lear may not have believed it at first, but he is fully convinced now that something is going on.
Before you turn to the books for answers, know that the TV series is only loosely based on the novels. Expect many surprises and twists as we move further into the story.
Not only do we have this to look forward to next week, but “You Owe Me A Unicorn” also leaves Brad and Amy in a difficult situation. After trying everything possible, the two find themselves surrounded and with no other way out but to turn themselves in.
With how powerful Tim Fanning and the others are quickly becoming, we doubt Amy and Brad will be under custody for long, though.
The Passage airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. Central only on Fox. Don’t miss it!
Hidden Remote receives advanced screeners to The Passage, so come back for a special teaser preview of episode 3, “That Never Should Have Happened to You,” in a few days.
