Focus on Namor comic could set him up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
By Tony Smejek
Namor movie on deck since there’s a bigger focus on him in The Invaders comics? Timing could be perfect for him to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A Namor movie seems to be more likely at this point in time. That said, it’s getting some recognition in his run of The Invaders comics writer Chip Zdarsky. According to an IGN article, the underwater character is said to be “really being given his due in the Marvel Universe.” It’s been a long time since he had his own solo comic. There is also an inclusion of Captain America, Human Torch, and Bucky Barnes, but the focus is clearly on Namor.
That said, could this set the precedence for Namor to get his own movie? DC already had its underwater superhero to blast through the box office, so there’s no question that it would make sense for a Namor movie to follow suit and the character to be “given his due” in the MCU.
The story line for The Invaders involves ties to Namor’s involvement in World War II. Enter Marvel Comics Presents No. 1 which delves into the origins of the character’s past around the time of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. So we’re finding out more details about the character at this point and a dissection into his origins. And what better way to start an origin story on the big screen than to have Namor front and center, right?
Namor “COULD make an appearance…” according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in October of last year, according to SyFy. He continues, “…still deciding IF & when.”

ComicBook.com discussed how it’s perfect timing at this point to go forward with a Namor movie and how he would be a strong character with rich content that can follow suit. Not to mention a backstory, que Marvel Comics Presents No. 1 and The Invaders. This goes to show his content is quite plentiful.
"Namor the Sub-Mariner brings a lot of similar strengths to the screen. He is a character with a rich history in Marvel Comics and capable of either handling his own film or playing a notable supporting role, as hero or villain, in another movie. He brings a backstory that offers lots of new stories and settings for Marvel Studios to explore, and a look and attitude unlike anything Marvel has brought to life so far."
After all, Avengers: Endgame does mark the end of phase three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the rights to the Namor character belong to Universal Studios and this tends to complicate things.
However, Disney acquired Fox and then there’s the use of Spider-Man a la Sony. So if characters can be pulled from those two studios, I wouldn’t put it pass them to pull Namor from Universal Studios in some fashion. In the past, it was probably thought to be near impossible to pull off such a feat, but why not attempt it since it would make sense to have access to ALL the Marvel characters, right?
Is a Namor movie map already being made behind the scenes and attaching itself to the culmination of flicks? How do you feel his adaptation to the big screen will carry over if it does happen?
