Last month, BBC announced Doctor Who is not coming back with new episodes until early 2020. Here are 5  Who-related things to do to help the year-long wait go by quickly.

When I first heard new Doctor Who episodes would not be airing until next year, I felt a little blue. As someone who mostly enjoyed the past season and adored Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, I wanted more episodes as soon as possible. When waiting for a new season of a show, one year can feel like a million years. For TV enthusiasts like me, the time between seasons can feel like an emptiness or a void and leave you craving for more. Looking for something to fill the Doctor Who void?

Here are 5 things to do while waiting for Season 12:

1. Watch Broadchurch

Tonally, Broadchurch is incredibly different from Doctor Who. It’s a heavy, character- driven, crime drama rather than an episodic, fun sci-fi. However Broadchurch features two actors  Doctor Who fans know well. David Tenant stars as a detective investigating the murder of a boy in a small town. Jodie Whittaker plays the child’s mother. The roles are completely unlike the role of the Doctor. However, I think this makes it more of a compelling reason to watch. It could be interesting for Who fans to see these actors’ range.

More from Drama

Broadchurch‘s other connection to Who is Chris Chibnall. Chibnall, who has taken over as showrunner on Who and has written several episodes for the most recent season, is the creator of Broadchurch.  He has also written or co-written all of the drama’s episodes. So, if you loved Season 11, Broadchurch might especially appeal to you.

2. Read Doctor Who books/comics

Similar to other huge sci-fi franchises, like Star Wars, Doctor Who has an expanded universe in books and comics. If you want more of Thirteen and her “fam”, why not read about more of their travels?

BBC Books have released three all new adventures, featuring  Thirteen and companions, written by three different bestselling authors. If comics are more your style, there are also Doctor Who comics starring Thirteen released by Titan Comics.  If you’re missing a previous Doctor, the expanded universe cover previous Doctors as well!

3. Follow Doctor Who on social media

Doctor Who has official social media accounts on multiple platforms and consistently post. Their posts often include behind the scenes/on set images and videos. Recently they posted a picture of the main cast on the first day back filming. It’s a good way to keep up with Doctor Who news, see sneak peeks for upcoming episodes, and watch how cast and crew made previous episodes.

4. Listen to a Doctor Who podcast

Podcasts can help fill the void a show leaves behind in many ways. Podcasts give different points of view, can entertain, and are a great way to pass the time while waiting for a show to come back. Luckily, there are a good amount of Who podcasts on outlets like Spotify and iTunes. Podcasts like Radio Free Skaro include Who reviews, news, and interviews.

5. Rewatch

If you’re missing your weekly dose of Who, why not rewatch the previous season? Yes, there are tons of new shows out on multiple different streaming platforms to watch, but there is comfort in revisiting favorite episodes. Plus, you might catch details on the second time around that you didn’t originally.
