A new press release says that the upcoming episode of The Goldbergs will honor an underrated classic baseball movie from the 80s. But which movie is it?

The Goldbergs is one of the best shows for kids who grow up with a love for movies. Almost every episode has a nod or a statement of love to Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood. He even pays homage to films that terrified him.  It’s honestly a genius concept because it allows him to make art and show his love for the artistic medium all at once.

This week is no different with the show taking a sharp turn into sports movies. Specifically, the episode will have a focus on Adam’s time with little league baseball. And to honor the occasion, Adam himself will show love for his favorite baseball film from the 1980s. Which movie exactly? Major League–which starred Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, and believe it or not, Wesley Snipes.

In the press release, Adam Goldberg himself explains his love for the film and how he incorporates the baseball comedy into the episode saying, “There have been a number of underdog sports comedies, and Major League is hands-down my favorite from the 80s.” He further adds, “Every year on The Goldbergs, I make a few movie homage episodes and this one has been a blast because I got to have my characters reenact some of the infamous moments from the movie”

It’s been years since I’ve seen the original but I was at the right age to appreciate the sequel–even though I’m aware it’s not as good as the predecessor. That said, the original is an underrated comedic gem that is grossly overlooked. Maybe because of Charlie Sheen and his tigerblood antics later in life? Hard to say but this should be a fun movie to revisit on tomorrow’s episode.

The press release also has a decent description of what to expect from the episode and Adam discusses his “epic failures” at trying to play baseball. Check out the full press release below:
