The Avengers: Endgame TV spot, which aired during the Super Bowl, includes a shot of Hawkeye staring into a hole with a bright red glow inside. Is he looking at Ultron?

Warning! Potential spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. You’ve been warned.

If you’re a Marvel fan, you’ve probably watched the latest TV spot for Avengers: Endgame several times, searching for any clues about the upcoming movie. One shot of interest depicts Hawkeye aka Ronin in some kind of wreckage. There’s no way to determine exactly where Ronin (Jeremy Renner) is, but the glowing red light in front of him gives us the impression that he’s looking at Ultron (James Spader).

To quickly recap, the last remnants of Ultron were supposedly destroyed by Vision (Paul Bettany) in the climax of Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Vision obliterated the final drones but many fans have suspected that an Ultron drone survived the extermination event.

Reasonably speaking, one of the hundred drones that Ultron commissioned could’ve easily landed in an uncanvassed area after the Sokovia explosion. The Vibranium spire which crashed into Sokovia’s lake dropped debris in many different directions so it’s possible that one of the drones remained intact—to some extent.

The reason we believe Ronin has gone and found one of them is the red light appears identical to the radiating glow from Ultron’s eyes. It can be seen at about 0:20 seconds into the TV spot which is embedded below.

While Ultron’s drones always featured blue-tinted opticals, the original was characterized by his “red” eyes. And seeing as how there haven’t been too many other instances of red lights like the one shown in the Endgame trailer, it’s possible Ultron’s consciousness survived inside of a separate drone.

Additionally, talks of “endgame” by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Age Of Ultron also provide evidence to those claims. Stark was referring to potential alien dangers but the use of “endgame” has been said in more than just one context.

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) also name dropped “endgame” during Avengers: Infinity War when referring to the climactic battle between the Avengers and Thanos.

While there’s no direct correlation to Ultron there, the use of “endgame” during his introduction to the universe and multiple instances afterward tell us otherwise. Our guess is that Ultron still has a role to play in the MCU. Perhaps Ronin will seek him out following the Avengers’ permanent disbandment.

With the Avengers: Endgame trailer showing Ronin on a solo mission to take down Yakuza soldiers —maybe he’s working with Ultron. Without the Avengers protecting the world, unlikely partnerships may be necessary—even if that means bringing psychotic androids like Ultron back into the picture.

To some, the idea of resurrecting Ultron would immediately seem like a bad idea. But since Ultron’s main concern—the Avengers—are now gone—his philosophies on how to protect the planet may be as altruistic as Tony Stark originally intended them to be.

The Avengers’ existence was the only reason why Ultron went crazy, so without them around, his focus would presumably shift back to protecting the planet. At the same time, this would give reason to Ronin partnering up with the psycho robot.

In any case, Ronin looking down at an ominous-looking red light doesn’t bode well for him. It could be Ultron, an Avengers transponder, or maybe he was tricked into recovering an item that turns out to be a bomb. Whatever it is, this particular scene will undoubtedly play an important role in Avengers: Endgame.
