Peggy Cleary is her own kind of driving force against the Vietnam War on The Kids Are Alright season 1, episode 13. Here are her 5 funniest (and most savage) quotes from this week’s episode.

Peggy Cleary (Mary McCormack) is a loving — and sometimes a bit ruthless —mom of 8 boys on ABC’s The Kids Are Alright. Her logic, humor and one-liner burns have had us rolling over the course of the sitcom’s first season.

In this week’s episode, “Vietnam,” Peggy took matters into her own hands when her two oldest sons, Lawrence and Eddie, were both drafted. As always, she voiced some very strong opinions about her family throughout the episode, and she wasn’t afraid to “drive home” her feelings about her sons’ draft notice.

Peggy’s 5 best quotes in The Kids Are Alright season 1, episode 13:

1 –  On her boys making independent choices

Peggy: “Lawrence is educated. He’s been out in the world. He stood on that spot where you’re in four states at once. I think he’s smart enough to make his own decisions.”

2 – On the calling of motherhood

Peggy: “You just go back to the seminary until this whole war thing blows over. I know the priesthood’s not your calling anymore, but I was never really called to be a mother. You make the best of a bad situation.”

3 – On putting her sons’ fears to rest

Peggy: “What was your dream about?”

Pat: “War. Will I have to go to Vietnam someday?”

Peggy: “Oh, honey. That’s not going to happen. There’ll be a whole different war by then. I only hope you and I are on the same side.”

4 – On her true feelings about the draft

Peggy: “I’d feel a lot better about this if I understood why the heck we were sending our boys over there… I’m all for the Flanagans exporting every one of their drooling chimps. We put a lot of work into these two.”

5 – On her need for more drama

More from ABC

Peggy: “I understood World War 2 with Hitler and all those wiseacres. This war doesn’t even have any decent villains. Who am I supposed to hate this time. Jane Fonda?”

Of course, Peggy had her own, umm… unique solution to stopping Lawrence from having to report to basic training in The Kids Are Alright season 1, episode 13. Just as any protective mother would do, she *accidentally* ran over Lawrence’s foot with the car. Can’t you feel the Clearly family love?
