3 shockers from Season 1, Episode 4 of Roswell, New Mexico
By Mads Lennon
On this week’s Roswell, Max considers putting his life on the line in the aftermath of the blackout and Liz leaves no stone unturned in her investigation.
After causing the blackout that has left the citizens of Roswell rattled, Max is prepared to do whatever it takes to make things right again. The hospital is suffering while running on generators and one small boy, who was involved in a wreck caused by the sudden loss of power, hangs in the balance of life and death.
Max eventually manages to save the day at the hospital but he’s only scratched the surface of his mounting pile of problems.
Rosa hated Isabelle.
In an effort to get to the bottom of Maria’s hatred for Isabelle, she does a little digging inside of her mind. While their catfights were entertaining, it’s clear Isabelle doesn’t like being disliked, especially when she doesn’t understand the reason.
Working off a hunch that Maria may be hiding something, Isabelle persuades her to read her palm but then hijacks her mind-possessing prowess to influence Maria into telling her the real story behind her grudge. Turns out, it’s because Rosa hated Isabelle and Maria’s loyalty to Rosa outweighed any desire she had to get to know the fair-haired alien.
But before Isabelle can find out the truth for Rosa’s distaste, she loses consciousness and Michael has to get her home. It’s no wonder she did, given she’s been overexerting herself in an effort to persuade Liz to leave Roswell. It was sweet to see Michael looking after Isabelle, wiping her nose, tucking her in, he’s a good brother to her at the end of the day, no matter what his rogue cowboy exterior might say otherwise.
Kyle’s dad may have been having an affair with Rosa Ortecho.
The chemistry between the cast on this show is ripe for a teen drama. Mason and Trevino smolder together. Kyle has become someone Liz can depend on when she feels in over her head in extraterrestrial drama. Therefore, it becomes even more difficult for Liz to drop a monumental bombshell on Kyle’s head.

After searching for Rosa’s ex-boyfriend, a man that may be able to shed clues as to the night Rosa died, Liz finds a note linking her to Sheriff Valenti. When she made this revelation, my jaw dropped. The town sheriff sleeping with a teenage girl? Sure it’s plausible but pretty shocking, even by CW standards. Even worse is Kyle’s reaction. He doesn’t take the news well.
Surprisingly though, Liz and Kyle talk it out like adults instead of lashing out at one another. Liz apologizes for jumping to conclusions just as Kyle comes around to the possibility of it being true. Liz doesn’t want him to feel as if he’s losing his father twice by ruining his memory and reputation and Kyle is touched. So touched, he offers Liz a chance to let off some steam and they partake in a steamy hook-up endorsed by Anatomy class.
Michael claims to be responsible for Rosa’s death.
By episode’s end, things aren’t looking good for the pod squad. Isabelle, Michael, and Max are scrambling to figure out how to protect themselves from Liz’s investigation. If Liz told Kyle about Max’s secret, it stands to reason the truth about the other two could come out too. If she continues to circle, landing closer and closer to the truth, it could uproot their lives or get them captured.
As Michael points out, he doesn’t want to end up a little green man in a cage. If Liz is looking for a murderer, he’ll give her one. Why should all three of them go down in flames for one’s mistake? “After all,” Michael begins, staring broodingly at his small family, “I’m the one who killed those girls.” Cue big gasp before credits roll!
So is it true? Is Michael the alien killer Liz is searching for? Something tells me no, or at the very least, there is way more to the story than meets the eye.
Odds & Ends
- “What did she do, not like your mixtape?”
- The TV gods heard me thanking them for Trevino’s sleeveless tank tops and granted us all with a shirtless Kyle Valenti this week.
- Totally digging the Maria/Michael scenes, since Michael seems to be bisexual… I’ll be keeping my eye on these two (though I totally love Michael/Alex too so the heart is torn).
- How does one make churro pancakes, I need to know… for science.
- Even if you don’t ship Max and Liz (not sure I’m on that train myself yet), you gotta admit that Parsons and Mason knocked it out of the park in their heartfelt scene towards the end.
- “Get Regina George out of here.”
- Who the heck is Charlie?
- Max getting all pissed about Liz hooking up with Kyle is pretty hypocritical since he was promising Cam some serious one-on-one time only a few hours before.
A new episode of Roswell, New Mexico titled “Don’t Speak” airs February 12th on The CW.
