The Magicians recap: Season 4, Episode 3, The Bad News Bear
By Drew Koenig
The Magicians attempt to stay one step ahead of their enemies in another heist episode this week.
The name of the game is survival for “The Bad News Bear.”
First and foremost, the Brakebills students have to survive Eliot, who is currently being possessed by a god. Margo came prepared, though, and offers to track down Bacchus in Fillory for him (because he’s really into the whole killing people thing) with distilled ambrosia that Marina has in her apartment. Essentially, it’s meth for gods and enough of it will render one unconscious.
Agreeing to the deal, Josh, Margo, and Eliot go off to Fillory to find Bacchus at his Bacchanal where he is still partying it away at the Fillorians expense. Since Josh is the only one that Bacchus trusts, he is sent in to slip it into his margarita, which he finally does after losing his grip once.
Unsurprisingly, Eliot kills Bacchus, because the other gods locked him in the tower, and pulls out some type of organ that Margo’s fairy eye finds deeply unpleasant to look at.

Now that they don’t have to worry about being slaughtered by Eliot, the rest of the Brakebills students learn from Marina that they all have a bounty on their heads by the McAllistairs and guess who wants to collect on that bounty. If you guessed Marina, you are correct.
To pay off their bounties, they need to get their hands on five Deweys, which is the new currency of the land. For this, they need a Black Card, which is essentially a magical credit card that lets you get Deweys. They realize that they need to duplicate one quickly without anyone noticing and to pull that off they need a talented magical forger.
Frankie, an old counterfeiter friend of Penny’s, can forge a Black Card easily enough, but he needs a template of a Dewey to really get started. To get one, Penny and Quentin have to underground magical card game called Push where the ultimate prize is a Dewey. After betting on Penny’s traveler abilities as collateral, they get cashed into the game and barely wins the necessary three games by the skin of his teeth.
Since Frankie’s magical disciple is luck, the good luck all goes into forgery and it all works out in the end as far as that’s concerned. It’s a zero sum, however, so the bad luck all goes into a stuffed teddy bear that needs to be held by someone or the forgery won’t work.
Who’s the lucky son of a gun that gets hold of the bear? That would be Quentin, because of course it is. Through the course of the con, he only gets a paper cut from a paper towel and attacked by a python that came out of the toilet, but is otherwise unscathed by the Bad Luck Bear.
Likewise, things go as smoothly as they can for Penny and Kady, who successfully come away twelve Dewey coins. A job well done across the board.
