Fox: What’s to come after the final two X-Men movies?

X-Men fans may rejoice as Fox washes its hands of its X-Men characters and passes the torch to Marvel Studios. It’s up to Feige to choose the next Wolverine/Logan.

X-Men/Wolverine fans can now expect a Disney/Marvel Studios-chosen character. A recent Slash Film interview with Lauren Shuler Donner revealed that Fox is done with its X-Men characters after the final two movies, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants. I don’t think there will be any worries as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige worked for Donner on the 2000 X-Men film and she feels “He’s got a great story sense.”

Compared to Sony’s deal with Spider-Man, Disney is all in with the mutants, so it would seem the skies the limit when it comes to their stories. However, Donner mentioned that with that much character capacity, she feels that there could only be a limit to four canons in that universe.

At least that’s her opinion. Donner also mentioned that if overdone, people will “get sick of them”. However, an article this past month in Variety revealed that Feige has no concerns about superhero fatigue.

Maybe Feige can extend it to more if done right. Although Disney has its streaming service, so there’s that option. However, the content of that service won’t connect to the big screen MCU, according to We Got This Covered. Thus separate canons.

If there is indeed a limit imposed, I would think Kevin would need to prioritize the story arcs and narratives to that which is most engaging to the audiences. One could only ascertain how the comics have their canons involved. So perhaps we can put it to a vote what canons would be most desirable as influenced by the comics?

The Russo brothers said that their Wolverine will be re-imagined in their universe. I couldn’t help but think about The Wolverine movie, which featured Logan’s Japan experience. A deleted scene could be fuel to inspire the re-imagined mutant. In the movie was a deleted scene where he opens up a case showing off the more comic book accurate version of the suit. Therein lies a hint of the character, yes?

Will the Russo brothers go off that? I seem to recall a more highly tempered Wolverine with a gravelly voice in the comics and animated TV show. Not sure how much of a derivative he’ll be or how he’d adapt to the big screen. Donner talked about going for a younger actor, taking into consideration how the body can only go so far in the elder stages, but she did say something about not ever considering an older Wolverine on screen.

"“Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t come back as older Wolverine. You never know. Future Wolverine, you never know.”"

My takeaway from this leads me to believe in something similar to the Batman Beyond animated series where the elder Bruce Wayne is working behind the scenes with the main star. I’m not sure why Donner would mention the character coming back as an older version and then throwing in a “Future Wolverine” comment. But the only analogy I could draw from it is that of Batman Beyond.

Next. What to expect from a Disney Plus rebooted Wolverine. dark

So what do you think of a four canonical map for the MCU X-Men, if any or more? If there’s a limit, what on-screen adaptions of certain storylines you’ve read in the comics would you like to see on the big screen? Share in the comments below.
