One Day at a Time follows three generations of a Cuban-American family as they bond and grow together while tackling many of life’s daily problems. Justina Machado stars as Penelope Riera Alvarez, a newly-single mom and military veteran that suffers from PTSD, depression, and anxiety. In addition to battling with her own problems, Justine faces parental problems as she raises two strong-willed children, Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz).

More from Netflix

Elena is the eldest child who is a proud female activist whose coming-out journey as a lesbian was both heartfelt and sincere. Alex is the youngest child who has a constant need to fit in with society despite his vibrant family and their antics.

In addition to those actors mentioned above, Todd Grinnell, Stephen Toblowsky, and Rita Moreno will return to the third season. Grinnell plays Dwayne Schneider, Elena’s best friend and rich landlord of the building. Toblowsky plays Dr. Leslie Berkowitz, Penelope’s boss and Lydia’s love interest. Finally, the legendary and EGOT winner Moreno plays the eccentric and lovable Lydia, Penelope’s mother and Elena and Alex’s grandmother.

Season 3 will pick off after the emotional ending to Season 2, where Lydia found herself in a medically-induced coma after suffering a stroke. Lydia survives, but Season 3 will deal with the repercussions of the near-death experience.

One Day at a Time is based on Norman Lear’s 1975–1984 version of the same name. Netflix’s version is a reimagining of the original series as the present series is based on a Latino family instead of a white, suburban family in Indianapolis.

One Day at a Time has been met with critical acclaim and praise. One of the reasons for the praise is due to its success in tackling important issues such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety amongst veterans. In addition to those themes, the show also covers sexuality, gender identity, religion, sexism, and racism.

Below is the official synopsis and trailer for Season 3.

"In a reimagining of the TV classic, a newly single Latina mother raises her teen daughter and tween son with the “help” of her old-school mom."
