Arrow: Will Laurel Lance reclaim the Black Canary mantle?

The original Laurel Lance may be gone, but her doppelgänger Black Siren is now a staple on Arrow. Could Laurel from Earth-2 eventually take on the Black Canary mantle?

The Black Canary has always been a big part of the story of Green Arrow. In the words of former showrunner Wendy Mericle, “It’s hard to do a show about Green Arrow without having a Black Canary.” On Arrow, the Black Canary has gone through several different incarnations.

It started out with Sara Lance who was simply known as The Canary. After her death, her sister Laurel Lance was inspired to take on the mantle of Black Canary in her sister’s honor. Laurel’s full name being Dinah Laurel Lance, aka the Black Canary from the comics. However, Laurel was sadly killed and the title then passed on to Dinah Drake. Dinah Drake is traditionally Dinah Lance’s mother, but in this version she is a young woman who happens to share Laurel’s name and meta-human canary cry.

Dinah Drake is the current Black Canary on Arrow but many fans still desire to see Dinah Lance become the Black Canary. While the Laurel of Earth-1 may have been killed, the show has since introduced her doppelgänger from Earth-2, known as Black Siren, making this dream still a possibility.

Black Siren initially started on The Flash as a villain and then moved over to Arrow. While she may have been a villain in the beginning, she has changed through the past two seasons, thanks in large part to Laurel’s father Quentin Lance. She is now a reformed bad girl who has taken on the life of Laurel from Earth-1 to honor Quentin.

Black Siren’s arc has been one of the most fascinating to watch as her redemption arc plays out and we see her try to fill the shoes of the original Laurel (not an easy task). Since she is slowly being redeemed, it has many fans questioning whether she could somehow take on the mantle of Black Canary.

In season 7, the show has given us a future timeline where there is seemingly more than one Black Canary, so while Dinah Drake may be the current Black Canary, it’s not impossible that Black Siren could take on the mantle as well as a tribute to her growth and her connection to Quentin and a way to honor the original Laurel.

In the future timeline the audience has been shown, we see that an older Dinah Drake has apparently resumed being Black Canary. But she’s not the only one. In the present, she gives Zoe Ramirez, the daughter of Rene, a canary pin and in the future it seems that Zoe is also a Black Canary. So it’s clearly possible to have more than one Black Canary in the show.

It’s also worth mentioning that in the future timeline when we see Rene he asks Zoe if Dinah has gotten her involved in that “canary business,” implying that there must also be other canaries besides Dinah and Zoe. He also later states that one of the canaries paid him a visit. While this isn’t confirmation, it’s certainly interesting and opens the possibility that there may be another canary.

It would also appear that due to her throat being slashed in the recent episode, with implications that it will damage her voice, Dinah Drake may have permanently lost her sonic scream. Leaving Black Siren as the only one who now has a metahuman canary cry.

Arrow has also thrown in a Black Canary reference in relation to Black Siren every now and then. In season 6 as she comments on Dinah Drake’s costume she quips that she would have gone with fishnets, a traditional element of the Black Canary costume. Black Siren is also seen using the code name Siu Jerk Jai in season 6 which is a code name used by Black Canary in some comics

Finally, there’s the fact that it has been announced Laurel will be leading a Birds of Prey episode soon. The Birds of Prey are typically led by Dinah Lance aka Black Canary. So it would make sense if Black Siren has taken on the Black Canary mantle by that point. After all, we have yet to see where she is in the future timeline. Which means anything can happen.

Do you think Black Siren will take on the mantle of Black Canary or should she stay Black Siren? Where do you think she is in the future?
