Supernatural history: Friday the 13th debuts in theaters
On this day in Supernatural history, Friday the 13th debuted in theaters. Jared Padalecki gave the horror genre a go, but did the movie work?
When the writer’s strike stopped production on Supernatural Season 3, the actors had a chance to do other projects. For Jared Padalecki, that meant working on the film Friday the 13th, the reboot of a popular horror franchise. That movie debuted on this day in Supernatural history.
Today marks 10 years since the release of the rebooted movie franchise. Unfortunately, it was a flop, but not because of Padalecki’s acting. Overall, the movie wasn’t something fans of the Jason Voorhees movies wanted or needed.

Padalecki played Clay Miller, the brother of a girl called Whitney, who had gone missing while up at Camp Crystal Lake. Miller runs into a group of friends who are at Camp Crystal Lake now and, of course, Jason starts whittling them down one by one.
If you’re looking for another CW connection, The Flash‘s Danielle Panabaker also starred in the movie. There’s also a connection to another one of Padalecki’s failed reboot movies, House of Wax. One of the characters in Friday the 13th was the name of Padalecki’s character in House of Wax, Wade.
Audiences liked the movie a little more than the critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the horror reboot 25% on the Tomatometer and 45% on the Audience Score.
Unfortunately for many, the movie couldn’t offer anything fresh and instead messed with the original mythology of Jason Voorhees. It also didn’t help that by this point, there had just been too many Friday the 13th sequels. However, there was some positivity around the lead villain, who had more depth than seen before.
