Shadowhunters: Will Sizzy be too rushed in 3B?

Sizzy is on the rise in Shadowhunters 3B! But does the cancellation mean their relationship will end up being too rushed?

One of the things fans of The Mortal Instruments  series have most been looking forward to is the rise of the relationship between Simon and Isabelle (aka Sizzy) in Shadowhunters. But with the show canceled and only half a season (plus a 2 hour finale) to wrap everything up, will that be enough time for Sizzy to happen naturally?

Putting the books aside (I know, I know, I can already hear the books fans – and I count myself as one – screaming) I think the show has done a decent job already of laying the groundwork for the Sizzy relationship on-screen. There’s already a strong bond between the two and they’ve been there for each other when they were going through some really hard times.

Going back to when the show first started, Isabelle is one of the first Shadowhunters that Simon meets and it’s clear he’s instantly smitten with her (he introduces himself as Lewis, Simon. Simon Lewis. It’s adorable). Isabelle also seems intrigued by Simon and finds him “nerd hot.”

The two of them develop an easy rapport early on, with Isabelle even cooking for him (which might not be such a good thing considering Izzy’s lack of cooking skills, bless her) and she takes it upon herself to protect him.

As time went on their stories drifted apart for a while, with Simon pursuing his crush on Clary and Isabelle becoming involved with Raphael. It was dark times for Sizzy fans.

Once Simon’s relationship with Clary reached its inevitable end (she was always going to end up with Jace, come on) and Isabelle ended her relationship with Raphael, their paths seemed to come back together.

Izzy was there to help Simon when he was having problems with Raphael, and in turn when she opened up to him about her yin fen addiction Simon didn’t judge her and spoke of his own experience with his mother’s addiction. He even got Izzy to be open to the idea of joining some sort of group or 12 step program to help her recovery.

Let’s not forget that people seem to assume that Simon and Isabelle are a couple as soon as they lay eyes on them. It’s happened several times now with Maia, Raphael’s sister Rosa, and Heidi the vampire that Simon sired. They took one look at Sizzy and got couple vibes, which says a lot.

In season 3 Maia had to leave town to sort through her own emotions and trauma after her ex Jordan returned. While she was gone it was Isabelle who was there for Simon after Heidi attacked his family.

Now, to be clear there’s no blame on Maia here. She did what she had to do for her own mental health and sanity. But unfortunately in a relationship when what’s best for you isn’t what’s best for the other person the relationship isn’t likely to last much longer. And it seems that’s where Simon and Maia are headed.

You can’t really blame Simon and Isabelle for growing closer either. They went through some tough times and were there for each other through it, so it inevitably bonded them. They were never out to hurt anyone by becoming closer.

When Simon needed someone to be there for him when his family turned their backs on him Isabelle was there to support him and lend a comforting shoulder. And she was there as he had to go through the heartbreak of making his mother think he was dead (seriously, all the awards to Alberto for that scene).

Their relationship works both ways, Simon was also there for Izzy when she was having family issues. When Isabelle was struggling with her mother being de-runed Simon was able to cheer her up and remind her that parents just need to know that you’re there for them and that Izzy was an awesome daughter. He even earned himself a sweet kiss on the cheek for that.

Now we can see in the new Shadowhunters 3B trailer that Isabelle will once again be by Simon’s side in his time of need as he appears to be trying to get rid of the Mark of Cain. No doubt fueled by his grief at the thought that he has killed his best friend.

Isabelle is right there with him, we see her on the ground cradling Simon and dripping blood into his mouth begging him to come back to her. It’s going to be such an intense scene, you can already tell from the trailer!

In the trailer released by Netflix (Which the Shadowfam kindly uploaded Here) we see Isabelle and Simon in the sewers on a mission, presumably to find information on how to remove the Mark of Cain. And Simon is comfortable enough with her to tease her about being afraid of rats. So it’s obvious the two of them will be spending a lot of time together in 3B.

Basically when it comes to Sizzy it’s about quality not quantity. Because while they may have had less scenes than some other Shadowhunters couples and their scenes may have been spread out over time (slow burn anyone?) it’s what the scenes say about their relationship that counts.

What Sizzy’s scenes tell you is that they are two people who were initially intrigued by each other and who have come to care for and respect each other. They’ve seen each other in their darkest times and never judged one another. They’ve saved each other, cheered each other up, and been a source of support. They even know each other’s family drama.

With all the development they’ve had it’s safe to say that Sizzy has a pretty good foundation now. And with Simon and Maia likely calling it quits soon after she returns to town it’s not unthinkable that Simon and Izzy would develop an attraction to each other (or realize the attraction is already there?) and act on it. I mean, did you see that almost kiss in the trailer?!

In the end, while 12 episodes may not be as many as Sizzy fans hoped for to see their favorite couple come together it doesn’t mean that they won’t be done justice. In fact showrunner Todd Slavkin assured a fan on twitter that Sizzy fans would be “really really happy”.

Besides, we have to take into account that we don’t know the pacing of their relationship in 3B yet. It seems like Sizzy will be given a lot of screentime together going on missions and dealing with the Mark of Cain, so as long as we see a few more episodes of bonding before they jump into romance it won’t be too rushed.

Also keep in mind that many shows have full seasons that are only 10-13 episodes long. When you think about it that way, 10 episodes plus a finale is more than enough time to develop a romance between two characters who have already become close.

So fear not Sizzy fans, good things are coming your way and as long as the show plays it right it shouldn’t feel rushed at all.
