Castiel has been the breakout character in Supernatural. He’s undergone a significant amount of character development during his time on the show, making him unique in his own way. Here are the things only Castiel can do.

For the first three seasons of Supernatural, it was believed impossible that a new main character would be introduced whom fans loved. The show had a disastrous experiment in Season 3 with Ruby and Bela, both of whom turned out to be a failure with the audience.

Fans wanted only the boys and would take someone remarkable for them to accept: Enter Castiel. The angel easily won hearts within his first appearance alone, and 11 years later, he’s still here. Castiel has been everyone’s favorite because of his own characterization, and this means he can provide things that others can’t. Here are five of those he does best.

Penance

All the other angels talk of penance, duty or what is right, but Castiel has so far been the only angel who has displayed his intention to pay for his actions. In Season eight, Castiel had a shot at escaping Purgatory with Dean, but would intentionally stay back despite having no other way to return to Earth or Heaven.

Castiel intended to do penance for slaughtering hundreds of angels in the Season seven premiere, and these weren’t just words as he let go of his only supposed opportunity to be free from the Leviathans, who had been hunting him relentlessly for a year. What’s more, he made sure his bestie Dean was first safely into the escape portal before Castiel nobly stayed true to his word and stayed back to repent for his crimes.

See leviathans in true their forms

Although we all hated that Misha Collins was demoted from series regular to a special guest star in Season 7, it did play into the season finale. Castiel was taken over by the Leviathans in the season premiere, and his body would be destroyed because of it. As it turned out in the finale, Castiel developed a power that enabled him to see the Leviathans for who they really are.

This included Dick Roman, who would have multiple Leviathans disguised as himself in order to avoid being killed by the Bone of the Righteous Mortal. Castiel, however, was the key to locating the real Dick Roman, and it was he who identified Dick in the end. Had it not been for this ability of Castiel, the world would’ve become Leviathan chow a long time ago.

Hold multiple beings within himself

In Season 9, we saw Sam carry not only Gadreel within himself but also Crowley. This feat would be overtaken by Castiel who achieved it in an even bigger magnitude. After he was resurrected by God in Season 5, Jimmy Novak vacated the body and Castiel was the sole owner of the vessel, which meant it was Castiel who held his own essence, Crowley, and Lucifer of all beings in Season 11.

We saw this happen when Crowley entered the body to make Castiel eject Lucifer. The fact that Castiel held both of them along with himself in the body is remarkable considering Lucifer wasn’t even in his true vessel, while Crowley was a demon. Any other person holding these three at the same time would’ve exploded within seconds, but Castiel’s body was completely unharmed.

Remember pop culture references

Castiel may sound like the last person you’d go to for a pop culture reference, but the truth is he’s the best option you’d have. Before Season 9, one of Castiel’s most popular catchphrases was “I don’t understand that reference”, because he literally didn’t understand any references.

However, Metatron would grow tired of Castiel always asking about pop culture references and would sear every knowledge of books and movies into Castiel’s brain so he wouldn’t have to remain clueless. The result was that Castiel became something of an encyclopedia for pop culture lingo as he took everyone – especially Dean – by surprise by having full knowledge of what they were talking about.

This knowledge has been seen as recently as Season 14, although Castiel still fails when having to understand why the particular pop culture reference was used in a certain context.

Be Sam and Dean’s best friend

This may sound tame to some, but it might just be the biggest achievement anyone’s ever made on the show. Sam and Dean have been famously guarded throughout the series’ run, and if you run down the list of names who can be considered their best friend, the only one who comes up is Castiel.

Before Cas came into the picture, the boys had a grand total of zero firm friends to their name. They only had Bobby, and he was more of a father than a friend. Castiel became a confidant and someone greater than a simple ally; he was the first outsider to be accepted into their extended family and remains the only one to have a definite bond with both Sam and Dean, rather than only one of them.

Castiel can also be credited with being the one who softened the brothers to the point they became willing to accept other people for close relationships. Kevin, Claire, Crowley, Rowena, and most importantly Jack, would never grow bonds with Sam and Dean had Castiel not been there to ease these relationships for them.
