Supernatural Season 14 saw the Empty threaten Castiel with the end of his life. That threat may not materialize until the next season.

In an effort to save Jack from being taken to the Empty, Castiel made a deal. He offered himself as tribute but the Cosmic Entity, aka The Shadow, made it clear that Castiel wouldn’t be taken yet. It was a reprieve in Supernatural Season 14 that made fans happy and now it may be a reprieve for longer.

During the Ask Ausiello segment from TVLine on Feb. 20, Andrew Dabb shared a tease of what’s to come. Now that the show has been renewed for a 15th season, it’s allowed the writers to breathe a little. At the time of renewal, there were still scripts to write and film (there are still scripts to film!) and the renewal gave the writers a little breather.

There’s a chance to spread out storylines to another season. Rather than dealing with the Empty storyline now, it could be pushed into the new season.

I guess, we could say the same for some of the other storylines. With the extra season, there’s a chance to push Heaven’s storyline into there or even drag the Michael storyline on longer.

Honestly, I get the feeling that sometimes storylines are thrown into the show without intention to deal with them in that current season. That was most definitely the case for the Heaven storyline from Supernatural Season 13, which is still to come to a head in the second half of Season 14!

Of course, we could see the end of the 14th season is when the Shadow’s threat comes to a head. This could be when Castiel is taken, setting up a storyline of the Winchesters trying to save Cass at the start of Season 15.

The good thing about pushing the storyline to the 15th season is that more focus can be on the main storyline currently in play. Michael has been a major problem from the start and we’re ready to see a resolution. With a slightly shorter season, there’s been less time to have side plotlines, so pushing to next season prevents having to rush something or affecting the main plotline.
