#4 Mahershala Ali – Best Supporting Actor Green Book

Mahershala Ali took the Oscar, his second overall, for his supporting role in the Best Picture winner “Green Book”.  Fresh off his first Academy win for 2016’s Moonlight, Ali gave a memorable speech that praised his character in Green Book, the real-life Dr. Don Shirley.

He also credited his costars Viggo Mortensen, Octavia Spencer, and his director Peter Farrelly.  He appreciated how Farrelly gave them space to tweak and work together to bring the story to life on the big screen.

Before leaving the stage, he made sure not to forget to thank and dedicate his win to his grandmother which was a major influence in his acting career and him never giving up.

"“I want to dedicate this to my grandmother, who has been in my ear my entire life telling me that If at first, I don’t succeed, try again.  That I can do anything I put my mind to. Always, always, always push me to think positively. I know I would not be here without her. She got me over the hump every step of the way.”"

A lovely and great surprise was Black Panther taking home three Oscars for the night.  For Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Original Score. A dark horse for best picture, Black Panthers Production Design took home a slot in best speeches of the night.  All thanks to Hannah Beachler.

The first Oscar Nomination and Win for the first African-American ever nominated in this category,

Hannah made sure to deliver a tribute and heartwarming speech to commemorate the win. Hannah starts off by thanking cast and crew and everyone involved in the film as well as her fellow nominees eventually leading up to her special thanks to the man who made it all possible, director Ryan Coogler.

"“I want to thank Ryan Coogler.  I stand here stronger that I was yesterday.  I stand here with self worth because of Ryan Coogler.  Who not only made me a better designer, a better storyteller, and a better person.  I stand here because of this man who offered me a different perspective of life, who offered me a safe space, and gave me air, humanity and brotherhood.”"

She then went on to thank Marvel for the opportunity for her to do her best.  Then closed it with an impactful and empowering quote, “ I did my best and my best is good enough.”
