Naturally, the 91st Academy Awards took the win in the Sunday TV ratings. Just how exactly did it fair based on the previous year?

The Oscars took the win in the Sunday TV ratings. That was never going to be up for debate. However, the host-less Academy Awards did see a surprise uptick in the ratings from the previous year — most people expected another decline.

While TV Series Finale reports that 23.62 million people tune in, this was just based on the preliminary views. With all timezones counted, 29.6 million people tuned in for the Oscars with a 7.7 demo rating, according to Variety. This was up from 26.5 million and a 6.8 rating in the demo in 2018.

There was certainly plenty of controversy and news surrounding the Oscars running up, which may have actually helped the awards show. The biggest news was that the ceremony would be without a host for the first time since 1989. Kevin Hart was originally going to host but stepped down after decade-old tweets resurfaced. The Academy decided to run host-less.

After that, there was talk of not showing the awards for a number of, what the Academy considers, smaller awards. Actors and actresses around the world called out against this decision, saying that the production of movies is a team effort and those “smaller awards” should be given the same recognition.

Then during the night, there were a number of surprise wins. Olivia Coleman and Rami Malek took the wins for Best Actress and Best Actor. Green Book was the biggest surprise, beating Roma and Black Panther for Best Film.

When it comes to the rest of the Sunday TV ratings, there was nothing that could compete. The only show to air a new episode was CBS’ 60 Minutes, which saw a 15% decrease in the total audience to 8.26 million and a 3% decrease in the demo to 0.8. They were the second best viewing figures of the night compared to all reruns across the rest of the board.
