The Umbrella Academy Season 2: Avengers game plan possible?
By Tony Smejek
The Umbrella Academy has been officially renewed on Netflix. Does the open-ended conclusion have an Avengers: Endgame-type of plan?
Caution: There are spoilers in this post about the finale of The Umbrella Academy Season 1
The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for Season 2, according to Geeks World Wide. I would hope so as it left us with an open-ended conclusion for ALL of them. Just before they traveled back in time to save themselves and Vanya, they all turned into children as Number Five had.
MCU vs. Umbrella Academy rumors/theories
As I was watching this show, I couldn’t help but think of the similarities it had with the Marvel comic characters. I would say Professor X is not unlike Sir Reginald Hargreeves who had attempted to keep Vanya’s powers subdued. Vanya could be considered The Umbrella Academy‘s Jean Grey in a sense.
I think the similarities between the Netflix show and Marvel continue. When I saw the ending to Season 1, I couldn’t help but personally flashback to the Avengers: Endgame rumors/buzz going around the Internet involving a plan of possibly using time travel to undo what Thanos had done to half the universe.
More from Netflix
- Bridgerton season 3: All the details to know about Penelope and Colin’s love story
- It’s a slow week on Netflix with only three new releases (Nov. 20)
- Exploding Kittens: From card game to Netflix animated series starring Tom Ellis
- The Crown and more Netflix shows and movies to stream this week (November 13)
- Escaping Twin Flames and more harrowing love-centered documentaries to watch on Netflix
I wouldn’t doubt rumors about The Umbrella Academy will also abound for the Netflix series, but we’re pretty sure we’ve witnessed a time travel event. I would say the Endgame movie time travel buzz are rumors and the rumors were likely instigated from the Ant-Man and the Wasp end-credits scene. You see, Janet Van Dyne warned Ant-Man on his trip to the quantum realm to avoid time vortexes. There’s also a snippet of surveillance in the Avengers: Endgame trailer of Scott Lang at the front gate with Steve Rogers questioning when the footage was taken.
Dormammu vs. Umbrella Academy time loop
Screen Rant put out a theory that The Umbrella Academy was thrown into a time loop. One part of it showed a clip of Professor Hargreeves a long time ago coming to America via Ellis Island and acquiring an umbrella manufacturing company. That said, it would stand to reason that maybe the newly youthful kids traveled back to that time to meet with Hargreeves upon his arrival in the United States.
I recall in Doctor Strange where the only way Stephen Strange could defeat Dormammu was to use the Time Stone to trigger a time loop that would involve their unending battle. It was only when the beast became aware of what was happening that he had asked the torment to stop. It would seem that Number Five has done his fair amount of temporal travel and I wouldn’t put it past the writers to involve a time loop in Season 2.
A trend of temporal stories in Sci-Fi
Back in March of last year, Entertainment Weekly interviewed Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and he referenced Star Trek: TNG‘s “All Good Things.” If Trekkies recall this one, it did involve a time element of sorts but connecting a past, present, and future Picard. So there seems to be a hint influential to Feige in the form of time travel, but it’s more about seeing into different points in time. I can only speculate there could be some characteristics and/or similarities in what to expect in The Umbrella Academy Season 2.
Of course, there seems to be a trending spike in science fiction stories involving time loops, alternate timelines, and time travel these days. There seems to be a serious interest with audiences when it comes to these storylines involving complicated twists with temporal paradoxes and so on.
Even though there may seem to be similarities between these two pieces of entertainment, be it on the big or small screen, there would be nothing keeping me from watching both. Everyone has their own take to their stories, so there’s no avoiding how close they come to each other’s likenesses.
Now that The Umbrella Academy has been officially renewed for Season 2, what are your theories regarding how the youthful heroes will try yet another attempt to stop the apocalypse? Do you think that the show will have some similarities on what to expect in Avengers: Endgame? Share your thoughts below.
