Whiskey Cavalier: The ideal dramedy for all fandoms
By Callum Gunn
Whiskey Cavalier is a new spy drama with just the right amount of comedy set to premiere on ABC and captures the imagination of all fandoms.
Ok, so don’t panic. If you haven’t watched Whiskey Cavalier yet this is a spoiler-free post. No details about the premiere will be revealed. All I am going to talk about is why you are going to love this dramedy regardless of whether you’re a massive fan of James Bond, RED, or Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It doesn’t matter what you’re in to, Whiskey Cavalier encompasses all fandoms.
So, one of the major problems with new TV shows is they are either a reboot of an older TV show or based on an older TV show. Which isn’t always a bad thing. The CW’s Charmed reboot has done well. However, those that have done well are far less than those that have flopped. Basically, we’re lacking fresh and new content.

Whiskey Cavalier, while it certainly can be compared to other TV shows in some areas, is fresh and original. While the show does tick off its fair share of tropes, you ultimately don’t care. Because overall, it’s entertaining. And what more can you ask for in a dramedy?
And what makes it so entertaining is how it encompasses bits and pieces from other spy thrillers and cop shows and makes it their own. From James Bonds’ unique and clever gadgets (there is a particular explosive moment that you just don’t see coming) to the Jason Bourne fighting styles and car chases, with a touch of Brooklyn Nine-Nine-style comedy. Whiskey Cavalier has a taking a bit of all of that and made it better.
It reminds me of when RED, starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren first came out in theaters. It wasn’t another typical spy thriller. In fact, if you were to imagine a younger version of the RED characters, Will Chase and Frankie Trowbridge, played by Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan, come pretty close.
Speaking of Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan, both of them are excellent to watch as they each bring something different to the table. Along with their other co-stars in the series, Ana Ortiz, who plays a character Criminal Minds will love, she is basically Penelope Garcia, Tyler James Williams, and Vir Das, all of the cast connects well with one another creating a lovable and hilarious partnership.
Overall, there isn’t anything bad to say about Whiskey Cavalier. It’s a fun, feel-good, dramedy that ticks all the boxes on brilliant entertainment.
