The premiere season of American Gods left a lot of unresolved matters. With the return of the series this month, these are the answers we need.

American Gods, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, really was a trip into worlds unknown in its first season with its strange mix of exciting visuals and very human Gods. While all of the Gods reside in places as normal as Kentucky and Chicago, the show also traveled to the afterlife as well as flashbacks to exotic locations of the past such as Ancient Egypt.

During the course of history, The Old Gods moved west following their worshippers to the new world in the Americas. The New Gods must have shown up with the advancements of civilization and bumped the Old Gods off their pedestal by getting a monopoly on the worshipers circuit.

America has turned to technology and media (which exist as the New Gods), and the Gods of yesteryear have become misguided superstitions of their gullible ancestors. If the Old Gods have no one to worship them, how could they continue to be their godly selves?

More from Drama

After losing his wife, the main character Shadow Moon, an ex-convict, ends up joining a God named Mr. Wednesday aka Odin, on his mission to gather Old Gods for a war. Moon becomes Odin’s bodyguard and doesn’t necessarily believe Odin because these Gods look no different from everyday people, but the stranger things become the more intrigued Moon is to stay and find out what happens.

Somehow, Moon is at the center of this godly war, and you get the idea that Odin isn’t honest about the real reason he’s plucked this guy for this very specific mission. After Odin gets Easter on board to take back the spring, Moon finds himself surrounded by New and Old Gods ready for a fight and his dead wife has returned looking more like a zombie than anything and wishing to have a word with him.

These are the questions that remain after last season’s explosive introduction and what we hope to see in this new season…
