Game of Thrones: Journey of Daenerys Targaryen to season 8

Game of Thrones season 8 is about a month away. Daenerys Targaryen is convinced that the White Walkers are a threat and is less one dragon. With her weakened fire-breathing force, will she reign on the Iron Throne?

Game of Thrones season eight will debut on April 14 and with the ending of season seven, there are still a lot of questions left to be answered. Dany Targaryen has endured similar trails, tribulations, and sufferings like that of her new cohort, Jon Snow.

With such shared experiences, you can indeed wonder of their compatibility in an aligned means to take on the threat to the north. But with a new discovery made by Bran with Sam’s verification via the Citadel’s vast knowledge base, their lack of compatibility leads to incestuous blood ties unbeknownst to the two.

From zero to hero

Her story is not unlike Jon Snow’s rise to power and like him, wants to make Westeros a better place to live. Daenerys also shares the same views as Jon as indicated with their encounter at Dragonstone in season seven. Dany expresses to Jon the turmoil and torture she’s been through and as such, taken on many titles. Although Jon doesn’t have multiple titles, he has similar shared experiences like that of Dany, including avoiding death. Like Jon Snow, we’ll explore Daenerys Targaryen’s rise to power.

Brotherly unlove and Dany’s first step to independence and power

To start off, Daenerys’ only family at the time was in season one of Game of Thrones. Of course, the season shows how people are treated in this world and like Jon Snow, Dany isn’t immune. She had an abusive brother who was bent on taking on Westeros and reign on the Iron Throne.

More from Game of Thrones

He was one that made the first step in handing his sister off to a warrior race’s king, Khal Drogo. Dany married Drogo and this ushered the step in the direction of the future of Westeros. She also acquired the three dragon eggs which would be great tools to aid House Targaryen’s rise to power. Of course, there was a matter of an unhinged personality brought upon her brother, Viserys

Dany knew not of the warriors’ language at first, but after learning their ways and her currying favor with Khal, he had reason to believe how unhinged her brother was and finished him off with molten metal poured over his head.

I would say it was through her strong, warrior-spirited husband that made her the way that she is now, and I’m guessing she still thinks about him until this day as a major influence to her achievements that led her to sit on the throne at Dragonstone.

Facing opposition every step of the way

As I watched Dany throughout the episodes and seasons, I couldn’t help but notice that she encountered road blocks and extreme opposition. Some would even try to throw a wrench in the works by doing other damaging things that would delay her mission. Sabotage to her plans had been prominent and even those on her side brought forth dissension in the ranks.

Dany had been through the gambit challenges by having her dragons stolen by warlocks, assassination attempts, betrayal, and so on were at every turn. She became more distrustful as she made her way through Essos. Can’t say that I blame her, considering that’s the nature of George R.R. Martin’s story. She proves herself every time as given witnessed to be “unburned” and her influence of those who see the goodness and strong-willed nature of her being.

Encounter with Jon Snow at Dragonstone

Game of Thrones finally introduced these two together and I would say this was a significant episode of the entire series because it pitted together two people who had strong similarities in shared experiences. Jon Snow was on his crusade to convince the world that everyone in the country should combine arms and face the army north of The Wall.

Dany was insisting that Snow should “bend the knee” to her and according to Jon, such things were insignificant compared to what was brewing beyond The Wall. That the petty bickerings in a child-like fashion regarding who will assume power in Kings Landing was something that should be tabled as the impending doom was a much greater concern.

When Dany approached Snow in the throne room at Dragonstone, she shared with him what she endured during her course in life up until now. The final summation was that she only had faith, and it was within herself she discovered this.  On the side of Jon Snow, his men and the people that followed him had faith him, regardless of his lack of birth right. When Sir Davos Seaworth let slip Jon’s death at the hands of some of his own men of the Night’s Watch, it looked like Dany understood that, like her, he survived death.

Dany allowed Snow to mine the Dragon Glass in her caves, and then he had come across the drawings of an era where men united against a common foe, the Knight King and The White Walkers. The evidence was clear that these beings weren’t myth, but fact.

Three dragons enter, two dragons leave

Game of Thrones’ final season had reveals with a considerable twist of events and not in favor of Dany either. For someone who had supreme power against all odds with the flying reptilian beasts, she had a rude awakening that they could easily be taken out. When she rode in beyond The Wall to assist Jon Snow and his men waging a battle against the dead, the Knight King took careful aim with an icy spear and downed one of Dany’s dragons. Into the lake the beast went, while his siblings gave a mournful outcry for Viserion.

It appeared that Dany couldn’t believe it herself, but the mission was to acquire a wight to be taken back to King’s Landing in order to convince Queen Cersei that such a threat exists.

The shocking twist of it all is when the Knight King laid hands on the deceased Viserion to bring it back to life as an unimaginable threat with ice-piercing breath. We had last seen that part of Westeros with the Knight King mounted upon his newly acquired steed, piercing The Wall as if it were butter.

The dead debuts at the dragon pit

The Game of Thrones series reaches its finality with season seven as everyone gathers at the council of Queen Cersei as Jon Snow and his cohorts bring back a crate as evidence that the army of the dead exists. Up until that time, the Lannisters had no belief in such things until The Hound released the wight. The ghastly thing made a b-line at Queen Cersei until it was halted by its chain. The others of the council looked on with horror.

It was apparent in Jaime Lannister’s eyes that this was a serious threat to the humanity of Westeros and Euron Greyjoy decided to back his navy out of warring against the army of the dead altogether. He recommended that Dany do the same.

Queen Cersei accepts the truce after seeing the monstrosity, however, she asked that Jon Snow keep to his territory in the north and to not take up arms against the Lannisters, but didn’t ask the same of Dany. Jon didn’t accept such terms, and Jaime was on board with allying with both of the parties.

Later on, Queen Cersei has a private meeting with her brother Jaime Lannister and revealed to him she has no intention of backing Dany and Jon Snow whatsoever. Jaime looked at her like she had two heads and that she had to be insane even after what she saw at the dragon pit. She revealed to him that she will be siding with the Euron Greyjoy  and the Golden Company, an Essos set of mercenaries, to go up against Snow and Dany. She said if her brother refused to back her, it would be an act of treason. Jaime Lannister had no part of it and walked away from Cersei and made way to the north.

Next. Game of Thrones refresher: Season 3 recap. dark

Game of Thrones is a cold environment, but with Jaime softening up a bit and being reasonable at this point in life, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes. Do you think the Golden Company and Euron will have enough to take on the northern armies? Do you think that Queen Cersei is unhinged and at this point has nothing to lose considering the loss of her offspring?
