Last week on This Is Us, Kate was rushed to the hospital when her water broke unexpectedly at only 28-weeks pregnant. Not only is Kate facing a high risk pregnancy because of her weight and age, but 28-weeks is drastically premature. In the newest episode airing tonight, her family and friends gather in “The Waiting Room” to hear news of her condition and the fate of her baby.

In this sneak peek, the Pearsons have gathered round as a doctor comes to explain to them what is happening with Kate. While 28 weeks is very premature, it is also a huge milestone in fetal development. So far, the drugs are working to delay labor, which they want to do as long as possible so that the baby has a chance to develop his brain and lungs. But the longer they wait, the higher the risk of infection, so they have Kate on antibiotics. Kevin might still be drunk, because he interrupts to ask, “Wait, Kate has an infection?” The doctor, a little put off but a master of patience, clarifies that no, she doesn’t, but there is a risk.

The doctor asks if they’ve all been waiting since Kate was admitted. They all arrived at different times, but the answer more or less is yes, 26 hours. “And we smell like it,” jokes Randall. In the background Miguel is busy looking something up on his phone, like a grandpa. The doctor says that there’s no need for them all to be there, that he’ll call them with any news. They should go home, freshen up, get some food. Rebecca refuses, saying no one is leaving. The doctor tries again to urge her to get some rest, but Rebecca cuts him off before he even starts. “This family stays.”

Miguel asks the doctor what kind of drugs he administered to Kate, because according to his two minutes of online research…

The doctor cuts him off, urging everyone to stay offline. “I like to pretend that we live in a world where only doctors are doctors.” Fair point. He asks if there’s any more questions and Kevin takes him aside. Kevin tells him that he has the financial means to get any doctor in Los Angeles, so if he ever feels he’s not giving his sister the best possible care he can call someone who can. Randall steps in and apologizes for Kevin, who knows how terrible he sounds but is way beyond caring if it means what’s best for Kate. The doctor is understanding enough and promises he will update Kevin accordingly.

The doctor promises that everyone can relax. The fact that he is out there with them means that there isn’t anything crazy going on back there with Kate. No one really look reassured.

Find out what happens with Kate tonight, Tuesday, March 12 at 9pm ET on NBC.
