Hulu took advantage of SXSW and premiered several upcoming shows, including Aidy Bryant’s Shrill. Is it worth watching? We’ve got the details!

Many movies and upcoming shows made their big world debut at Austin’s SXSW this year. Hulu screened a few shows in front of an excited audience and critics, and their highlight is  Shrill starring Saturday Night Live‘s Aidy Bryant. Did we love Shrill enough to recommend it? The short answer is yes!

From Hulu, here’s the official description for Shrill: “From Executive Producers Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks comes Shrill, a comedy series starring Aidy Bryant as Annie, a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body. Annie is trying to start her career while juggling bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss.” The series is based on the book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West.

Our thoughts? We love it. Shrill is extremely relatable and Aidy Bryant is the perfect actress for this role just for her charming personality and ability to easily take the viewers hand through the story. You’ll love Annie almost instantly and begin to feel for her right away.

More from Hulu

Annie is a people-pleaser. Even at her own expense, Annie’s response is always an enthusiastic “Absolutely!” and you’ll want to defend Annie from everyone around her who isn’t treating her right, which is just about everyone with the exception of her best friend and roommate, Fran (Lolly Adefope). It doesn’t take long for audiences to nervously wait for Annie to reach her breaking point as everything begins to crumble around her. Because OMG the disrespect!

For starters, her f-ck buddy is the biggest jerk in town. At work, Annie isn’t appreciated one bit or even given the chance to speak. And she’s insulted by a total stranger who wants “to help” Annie get in shape. Eye roll. If we were Annie, our boiling point would have arrived long ago, but she’s a saint. And when she finally decides to turn her life around and stop being so nice she handles it in the best way possible. Annie makes it clear that she wants to change her situation at work and in her personal life, but not her body. Why should she? And yes, all of this happens in the first episode, titled “Annie,” hooking you from the get-go.

The comedy isn’t LOL funny, Shrill is more relatable than anything, but do expect a few giggles and nods instead laughing until your belly hurts. Some of the situations presented are very controversial, but are handled gently and never done just to shock audiences. Shrill challenges what the majority views as normal and is incredibly empowering.

Shrill comes in at the perfect time as women need to read and watch stories like this more than ever. Annie’s journey is sweet, inspiring, and gives audiences a boost of confidence.
