It’s not often you get a show as unique and open about its sexuality as STARZ’s latest, Now Apocalypse. The series isn’t your average stoner comedy despite how it might appear. The positive look at sexuality across the spectrum, aided by Steven Soderbergh and Gregg Araki’s unique vision and sense of direction give this show an eclectic edge to make it stand out from anything else currently airing on television.

If you watched Soderbergh’s last STARZ show, The Girlfriend Experience, then you may have a taste for what you’re getting into with Now Apocalypse. Although, Now Apocalypse trades in the thriller components for humor.

Last week we were introduced to Now Apocalypse and the wonderfully bizarre world these characters live in. We began to follow Ulysses and his dating life. He has an intense, cosmic relationship with Gabriel, a guy he met through a dating app. While together, they experience a personal connection so deep it transcends sex and leaves Ulysses feeling moved.

In addition to his dalliance with Gabriel, Ulysses has been haunted by ominous dreams foretelling a sinister force ravaging the city. His premonitory dreams lead him to discover a reptilian alien creature assaulting a man in a deserted alleyway. This week, Ulysses tries to work out whether or not what he saw was real. He begins to research alien conspiracy theories. Could the aliens already be amongst us? Disguising their lizard bodies as powerful figureheads and celebrities?

We met Carly, one of Ulysses’s best friends. She has a stale relationship with her boyfriend Jethro. Both of them are aspiring actors and Carly is a part-time cam girl to earn extra cash. In the second episode she attends an acting class and attempts to spice up her sex life.

Ford is a beautiful, yet endearingly sweet, aspiring screenwriter who catches his big break when a powerful producer named Barnabas reads his script. He lives with Ulysses and is dating the equally gorgeous scientist, Severine, who doesn’t believe in monogamy. Hopelessly in love with her, Ford is willing to do whatever she asks to keep her happy. In tonight’s episode, they’ll experiment with the terms of their open relationship at Severine’s request.
