Betrayals, body doubles, and explorations of past lives abound in The Magicians.

“The Serpent” is in a lot of ways a transitional episode of The Magicians to get us to the end point of the season. In Fillory, word has reached Margo that Eliot is still alive inside The Monster and that they’re working to get him back. Josh tells her of a weapon that he heard of that can drive an exorcism from a body and save the host, mind, and body,

At the same time, Fen is making plans with the Queen of West Loria to overthrow Margo, as per the prophecy that they both have now received from Napster. Josh overhears this and quickly warns Margo.

That’s all well and good, but it soon becomes clear to Margo that in order to get the weapon she’ll have to give up the throne and begs Fen to overthrow. Fen and Tick banish Margo, forbidding her from ever returning to Fillory, and Fen is named High King, the first one that is a native Fillorian.

Back on Earth, Alice is working with Kady and Zelda to release Harriet from the mirror realm when they realize that she has been shattered in three pieces.

She needs to be reunited in a light casting ritual to be able to leave the mirrors. Alice is able to pull one of them out before it goes wrong and Alice is split in two: regular Alice and another one that represents her arrogance.

Alice doesn’t trust her arrogant self and locks her into a room. Soon enough, after screwing it up, Alice realizes that she needs both sides of herself to do this and releases her to successfully do it.

Meanwhile, Julia, Quentin, and Penny are trying to crack how to build a body for The Monster and the connections of the rocks. The Monster, however, has realized that a psychic can unlock the repressed memories locked away inside of him. He kidnaps one, but inadvertently kills him and sets out to find another.

Penny volunteers, since he’s a strong psychic from the days of his link with The Beast and is fairly confident that he’ll be able to survive the journey into The Monster’s head. Once inside, he guides the monster on a journey through his memories, finding one of great significance for him involving a girl as a human sacrifice. We still don’t know the importance of this, but Eliot has pieced it all together being in The Monster’s mind and shares it with Penny when he sneaks off to the door to Eliot’s mind.

How does the girl play into all this? That remains to be seen, but Eliot and Penny believe it to be bad business and that should make us all nervous for what’s to come.
