Falling in love is hard, but falling in love while living under a communist regime can be problematic. The historical period drama, Cold War, which was nominated for three Academy Awards, is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Set during the Cold War from the 1940s to the 1960s, the film tells the story of a musical director named Wiktor Warski (Tomasz Kot) who falls for a young singer, Zuzanna “Zula” Lichoń (Joanna Kulig). Wiktor and Zula are from different backgrounds and hold contrasting political views, but are drawn to each other and become inseparable.

The duo falls madly in love with each other, but since they live in post-war Poland, the duo is under communist regime. The couple dreams of freedom and when they finally get a chance to flee to France, the duo faces a setback and must make a decision that will change their lives forever.

Cold War takes place over three decades and depicts a passionate love story in such a hopeless area and disturbing period of history. The film is shot in black-and-white and beautifully directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, the award-winning director from Poland who won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015 for Ida. In fact, Cold War is loosely inspired by the love story between Pawlikowski’s parents.

Upon its release in 2018, Cold War was met with universal acclaim with critics citing the acting, direction, screenplay, and cinematography. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post said, “Cold War is a near-perfect film, an artfully crafted, flawlessly acted meditation on love, memory and invented history that’s both deeply personal and politically attuned.”

Cold War received three nominations at the 2019 Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography. The film also earned four BAFTA nominations for Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

Below is the official synopsis and trailer.

"Cold War is a passionate love story between a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. With vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it’s the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate — an impossible love story in impossible times."
