Friday TV ratings: Most shows continue up during March Madness [Mar. 22]
March Madness proved successful for more TV shows across other networks on Mar. 22. Here’s a breakdown of the Friday TV ratings and what they could mean.
If you’re a fan of scripted Friday night programming, there’s a chance your favorite show had a good night on Mar. 22. The Friday TV ratings are in and March Madness continues to prove successful for other networks.
Let’s just start with the March Madness results. Thursday saw it kick off low compared to the previous season. However, CBS saw an uptick in the viewership last night, with 4.82 million people tuning in. It was up by 20% (almost a million more viewers) on Friday. And in terms of the demo, that was up to 1.4 and pulled in the highest demo of the night.
More from Ratings
- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down
- Wednesday TV ratings: One Chicago mixed, Kung Fu down (November 9)
- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)
- Weekend live TV ratings: Fire Country and FBI mixed
Yet, other shows faired well. The CW saw both its scripted programs, Dynasty and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, jump up in the double digits. Dynasty was up by 67% in the demo and 34% in the total audience, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend jumped up 11% and 45% in the two metrics respectively. While these ratings don’t matter for cancellations and renewals, they’re still a boost for the fans.
ABC also saw a boost all-round, starting with Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless in the first hour. Fresh Off the Boat was up by 7% in the demo and 2% in the total audience, but it was Speechless that had the better night of the two, up 16% and 13%.
20/20 continued the up, with 14% up in the demo and 24% up in the total audience. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about for this series. However, despite the upward ticks, ABC may look at replacing its comedy duo as they remained some of the lowest throughout the night.
FOX and NBC had mixed results, with their shows the only ones to see some dips. Both Last Man Standing and The Cool Kids saw dips in the total audience, but nothing to be overly concerned about. The Cool Kids is the most worrying with it being a new season, but it still performs better than the majority of other shows on a Friday night.
NBC’s Blindspot saw the largest dip of the night, losing 14% of its demo to a 0.4. The total audience did tick upwards by 16% but this may be too little too late. The demo is now at a season-low for a show that has been 20% lower in the demo compared to the previous season on average.
Meanwhile, The Blacklist and Proven Innocent both saw upward ticks for the two networks. We know that The Blacklist will be back for a seventh season, although it looks like we’re losing one of our favorites already. Proven Innocent saw a 23% upward tick in the total audience and 8% upward tick in the demo, but they may not be enough to save this freshman show.
