Clace’s plan to seek out Lilith

As we saw in the Clace preview clip, Jace and Clary do go to see the Silent Brothers in Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 16, but Clary explains that the magic behind Lilith’s rune is something with which the Silent Brothers are not experienced. Jace, of course, is still determined that a separation is possible because of what happened to Michael and Lucifer, but Clary wants to go straight to the source of the rune.

We do see a few shocking and suspenseful moments in this episode where the darkness of the rune “takes over” within Clary, and it’s a combination of her behavior and information about the plan that helps sway Jace, Simon, and Isabelle to join her on the mission. What we especially love about this group team-up (though we love them all) is that each of the characters has a very unique strength, ability, and/or purpose to help execute the plan. We hoped the team had learned their lesson about summoning demons back in Season 2, but they do get some points for at least trying to carry-out the plan at an off-site location away from the Institute.

There are several very interesting twists to this storyline that raise the stakes and drive up that “watching at the edge of your seat” feeling. Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and Simon’s actions will be a catalyst for additional conflicts they couldn’t foresee — but they are prepared in ways the audience wasn’t let in on either.

We will say that the team receives valuable information that will help drive this storyline forward in the next few episodes, and it also unites two previously unreleased storylines together in an unexpected way. More than one character has a distressing, complicated reunion, and all four of them become involved in a tangled, fast-paced action sequence where there’s definitely some gray area about whose decisions were valid and justified. Visually, the scene creates these very intense and compelling singled-out moments for each character.

Clary makes a difficult choice at the conclusion of it all, but just keep trusting in your girl, okay? While there are plenty of scream-worthy moments leading to an ending that seems a little bit predictable, there are a few more twists up Clary’s sleeve that will likely leave you feeling extremely satisfied. Not to mention, there’s also a beautiful Clace parallel here between Seasons 3A and 3B that’s going to make your ship-loving heart swoon.
