Monday TV ratings: 9-1-1 up, Magnum P.I. down [Apr. 1]
The first day of April brought new episodes of almost everything. Monday TV ratings are in, seeing Magnum P.I.’s season finale drop, 9-1-1 up, and The Enemy Within, Bull, and more mixed.
Monday TV ratings for Apr. 1 are mixed, to say the least. With the majority of networks only airing new episodes of TV shows, a lot of shows either saw major losses or remained relatively steady. Magnum P.I.‘s finale was slightly down, 9-1-1‘s intense episode was up, and The Enemy Within, Bull, and others were mixed. Here’s a look at the ratings.
The two unscripted programs on 8 p.m. both saw dips. The Voice fell by 8% in the demo and 6% in the total audience. Considering both metrics were the best of the whole night, still, I don’t think there’s a need to worry about this.
More from Ratings
- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down
- Wednesday TV ratings: One Chicago mixed, Kung Fu down (November 9)
- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)
- Weekend live TV ratings: Fire Country and FBI mixed
However, American Idol fell by another 7% in the demo and 3% in the total audience. The demo was the third best of the night behind FOX’s 9-1-1 and the total audience was third best, with CBS’ Bull taking over at 10 p.m.
While The Neighborhood‘s demo was good and steady, it did fall by 2% in the total audience. This is nothing to worry about as the show has already been renewed for the second season. The Resident, which was renewed for its third season last week, was up by 3% in both metrics, pulling in a respectable 5.14 million viewers and 0.9 in the demo.
The only show in the 8 p.m. slot to see a dangerous loss as the return of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on The CW, which lost 27% of its demo and 12% of its total audience, seeing it drop to less than a million. The show has been renewed for another season, but could that be the last? I did worry about being renewed for the fifth season this year before The CW made the announcement in January.
The 9 p.m. timeslot saw the first season finale of Magnum P.I., a show that has already been renewed for the second season. The finale was disappointingly down from the previous episode by 4% in the demo and 5% in the total audience, taking it to a joint series-low and second lowest respectively.
9-1-1 bounced back from the previous episode with an episode focused on Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Maddie. She had to face her fear and her abusive husband, as he abducted her. Athena and Buck went on the road to find them, following every trace they could. Both metrics were up by 6% in the demo and 7% in the total audience. The great news is 9-1-1 was renewed at the same time as The Resident.
The 10 p.m. slot was mixed. NBC had the best demo metric for the timeslot, with The Enemy Within jumping up by 1% to 0.8. The downside is the total audience slipped by 12%.
Bull on CBS was the show to win the total audience of the timeslot, with a 5% increase to 6.74 million. however, the demo dropped by 14%. Meanwhile, The Fix dipped to a series low in both numbers, falling by 12% in the demo and 21% in the total audience.
All three shows are still to be renewed or canceled and all three are most certainly on the bubble. The Fix will be the most disappointing for ABC.
Because of the demo position, The Enemy Within may be renewed, but this will depend on whether NBC thinks it can find a better freshman show for next year. CBS may save Bull, purely because it is a CBS Studios production so will cost less. However, it’s hard to see which way the networks will go.
