The Magicians goes back in time to a first season episode as others have a chat with a book.

As The Magicians marches into the final episodes of this season, the scope of the big conflict starts to come into focus. We start off the episode with Margo back on Earth from her grand adventure to the desert and she’s really excited to talk about it again and again. As Margo relays her tale to Julia, Quentin, Penny, and Alice, they realize that they’re still a step away from action.

It’s all well and good to be able to drive The Monster out of Eliot’s body with Sorrow and Sorrow (the names that Margo has given her axes), but it won’t be enough to simply put it in a bottle like was done to the spirits in the desert. They will need an Incorporate Bond, which is essentially a fourth-dimensional paperweight that will trap it in place.

They learn from Dean Fogg that the only one that knows how to perform an Incorporate Bond is Mayakovsky, who is back at Brakebills South and is luckily no longer a bear. Quentin and Alice, being the only ones willing to go to Antarctica, head off for a fun chat with their one-time instructor.

Once there, they find that Mayakovsky had a mishap with a time travel spell and his consciousness went to the future instead of the past and now his present self has an acute case of dementia. Since the current version of Mayakovsky can’t give them the spell, they decide to send Quentin back in time to when they visited Brakebills South during the first season and get the spell from him then.

The spell goes off without a hitch, only the moment that Quentin finds himself back there is when Alice and himself were fresh off being foxes and are about to consummate their relationship. Quentin, as you can imagine, isn’t super down for that and quickly escapes to find Mayakovsky. Naturally, he finds him making his way to the bottom of a bottle. After some convincing, accidentally revealing that he’s from the future, and a final test to determine what Quentin’s magical discipline is (remedy of small objects), Mayakovsky gives him the Incorporate Bond spell and sends him on his way.

Elsewhere, Julia, Penny, and Margo are doing research on the Binder when it bites Margo and goes blank. They soon learn that their words are now written in blood and that the book wants more. Margo happily obliges (let’s not get into details here) and a man climbs out of the Binder.

He is a physical manifestation of the Binder and has decided to take a more active role in helping Julia to either achieve deity or human status again. He reveals that the New Gods were once simple magicians who learned to make themselves by harnessing the power when another God was killed.

The downside was that every time an Old God was killed, magic would be shut off. They soon learned, however, of two siblings that were born with the powers of many gods and could not die so there wouldn’t be any retribution from the Old Gods. They separated the two and took the female sibling, the more dominant of the two, and split her into four parts and put them into four Librarians: Bacchus, Iris, Heka, and Angus.

This plays into the endgame of the season, not only The Monster but also with The Library as Kady and Zelda discover from reading Everett’s book. He’s stockpiling magic in the hopes that he can become a God himself and, according to the book, he’s successful.
