Like All American, In the Dark is one of the CW’s few series that doesn’t stem from an established franchise. Does the new series have what it takes to stand on its own two feet?

I admit when the concept of the CW’s latest unaffiliated drama (a.k.a. a series that isn’t borne of a franchise already) In the Dark, was announced I was skeptical at best. A blind girl and her dog named Pretzel try to solve a murder? It sounded a little too Hallmark-y for my tastes but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how good In the Dark (not to be confused with Hulu’s anthology horror show Into the Dark) actually is.

Murphy is a troubled woman who happens to be blind. Due to her blindness, she is easily dismissed by the detectives who are called to investigate her report of a missing body when she believes her friend has been murdered.

Other characters include her adoptive parents, Joy and Hank, who run a guide dog school called Breaking Blind (love it). Jess, her gay roommate who often winds up taking care of her. Tyson, her close friend that she believes may have been murdered and his sketchy Uncle Darnell. Finally, there’s Dean, a kindhearted cop who feels a kinship with Murphy due to having a blind daughter of his own and attempts to help her solve the mystery of Tyson’s death.

If you haven’t already watched the pilot episode, I advise you do as soon as possible and if you need some incentive I’ve 3 reasons you need to check it out!
