American Horror Story Season 9 officially has a title. The question is whether the slasher movie teaser is just a misdirect. I immediately thought of George Orwell.

After months of waiting, we finally have a title for American Horror Story Season 9. It was released with a teaser of footage that looks like it belongs in a slasher movie. However, I’ll admit that I thought of George Orwell’s dystopian novel.

American Horror Story: 1984 is the title for the ninth season. Do you see why I thought Orwell? It’s the title of his novel set in a time period where the world is run by Big Brother. The government can see everything. If you haven’t read “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and love dystopian futures, this is certainly a classic that you need to check out.

A Big Brother setting would certainly connect to many AHS themes. However, the footage from the trailer is more slasher movie-like, suggesting that it’s going to be more on-the-nose horror than the original thought.

In the year 1984, we were given a number of excellent horror movies. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter was released and then came Children of the Corn, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and so much more. There’s no denying that some of the horror classics were from this year and they could certainly be the inspiration for Ryan Murphy’s ninth season.

Yet, could the teaser just be a misdirect? We’ve seen it happen before. Remember Season 6 when we had no idea what the title would be until the series began? Multiple teasers were released but only one was real. Could this be Murphy playing a game with us again?

Or, could it just be confirmation that this season is another in the past? Will we head to 1984 for the storyline this season? It is time we got a past-set storyline since the last two seasons have been present day.

So far, we’ve had little information about American Horror Story: 1984. Emma Roberts will return, but this is a year without Evan Peters (his first year on the series he hasn’t returned, by the way). We’re still waiting to hear if Sarah Paulson – the only other cast member who has been in every season up to this point – will return.

The good news is the teaser gave us a rough release. The FX series will be back in the fall again. We’re looking at either the end of September or the start of October for release.
