The Magicians braces for the climax of the season as everyone gathers the strength needed to confront The Monster once and for all.

It’s the penultimate episode of The Magicians‘ fourth season and things are finally coming to a head. The Monster has found a way to bring back his sister, a worse version of himself, and has decided to use Julia as the vessel given her indestructible nature. Now, the two have teamed up and are on a rampage to bring down the Old Gods.

On the quest to stop them, Quentin, Alice, Margo, and Penny are looking for ways to power up their new spell that can take out the siblings. They need far more magic than they have at their disposal currently. Thankfully, Fen, Josh, and Tick have found a reservoir of magic in the castle that they can use.

Unfortunately, it has been cursed as evidenced by Josh, who is now a fish that requires constant eye contact from someone (Margo) or he will die.

In a classic good news/bad news situation, Kady and Zelda found someone while they were trapped in the Poison Room that theoretically knows how to get rid of the curse, but it’s Christopher Plover.

Quick refresher: Christopher Plover is the author of the Fillory novels, sexually molested Martin Chatwin, and is largely responsible for Martin becoming The Beast.

Plover informs everyone involved that Martin once told him about this reservoir called The Secret Sea that was a stockpile by the 13th King of Fillory but was unfortunately cursed. Martin had discovered that there is a flower near the reservoir that, when bloomed, will protect you from the curse.

The only downside is that the flower will only bloom for someone who truly loves Fillory. Martin had become so disenchanted by Fillory that it would no longer bloom for him. The obvious person for this job is Quentin, but he exists in a similar boat.

Fillory has disappointed him too many times. He thinks of it now as this idealized, naive artifact from when he was younger that is more or less irrelevant to the person he is now. In the end, Quentin comes to the conclusion that even if everything he once believed about Fillory isn’t true, it was still a refuge for his younger self and others like him. It kept him alive, gave him hope, and that’s enough for him.

Naturally, the flower blooms for him and Alice and take enough of the flower to shield themselves from the curse and take as much of the reservoir as they need for the spell. They arrive at the Library just as The Monster and his sister are attacking in search for an ancient scroll and are now ready for the final showdown.
