Despite its cancellation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine remains one of the most beloved series on TV but what makes the show so attractive to its viewers?

It’s hard to believe that FOX ever thought of canceling Brooklyn Nine-Nine. As one of the funniest yet still insightful series on TV, the 99 has cultivated a large following. A large enough following that the series was revived by NBC shortly after cancellation.

Then again as fans, all of us already know this and can’t sing the praises of NBC more. With the show now on its 6th season, a question still remains: What makes Brooklyn Nine-Nine so great?

If you’ve never watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine, then there might be spoilers ahead. This is your warning!

With the spoiler warning out of the way, let’s get into the big question. How has Brooklyn Nine-Nine managed to achieve what so few shows do? Not only did they get canceled and brought back, but the show seems to get more successful. Additionally, the series has stayed the same for the most part. Let’s get into some of the reasons why the show has become such a large pop culture phenomenon.

More from NBC

Starting off with the premise, it’s a really unique one. Cop shows are usually shelved as drama and many people can’t find the humor in what cops do. However, Brooklyn Nine-Nine does a great job of toeing the line. The show is credited as a sitcom but it’s also a romance, drama, and family story wrapped into one. The ability to cross genres isn’t particularly unique but the series is one of the best to do so.

Bouncing off the premise, the show does a great job of featuring unique plotlines. The show has featured episodes about racism, sexual assault, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It doesn’t make them the punchline of the episodes, either. Everything is treated with respect but the show also features a lot of goofy plotlines, too. While serious plotlines can be heavy, there is usually a b-plot that gives viewers a break.

What truly makes the series one-of-a-kind is how well-developed the main cast of characters are but especially Jake Peralta. Peralta is the heart of the precinct and he has grown so much as a character since the show started. While originally a naive and impulsive person, he’s grown more cautious and smarter as the series progressed. Even though Peralta gets a lot of attention, everyone has their favorite character and no character is ever on the sideline for too long.

The relationships and friendships between the characters are so special. Obviously, the relationship between Jake and Amy is one of the best. The two were an unlikely pairing but managed to become the darlings of the internet. The friendships are easily some of the best on TV, too. One of the most underrated pairings is Hitchcock and Sully, the couch potatoes of the 99 but the best of friends.

The characters wouldn’t be anything without the cast of the series. Somehow they managed to cast the perfect actors for each of the characters. It’s clear that the actors care very deeply about their characters, too. Everyone has their ideas on who embodies their character the best but personally, I think Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz is spot-on.

Pinning down one reason Brooklyn Nine-Nine is beloved is tough. Everyone has different reasons why they love the show. That’s what makes it so awesome and why NBC ultimately decided to save it.

The series is charming, insightful and continues to change the landscape of TV. It’s unclear how much the longer the series will air but either way, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is easily one of the most beloved shows currently airing.
