Black Summer, the highly anticipated prequel series to Syfy’s popular zombie series, Z Nation, is now streaming only on Netflix.

Netflix is cashing in on the zombie hype with its own apocalyptic zombie series titled Black Summer. It’s not the first series to feature zombies on the streamer, as it’s recent Korean hit, Kingdom, does as well, but Black Summer stands out because of it’s unique origins.

The series is actually a prequel series to another popular zombie show called Z Nation, a Syfy show that aired for five seasons. Z Nation never garnered a ton of critical praise or a huge audience but it did amass a loyal cult following who were disappointed to see the show axed before it could garner a sixth season renewal.

It’s a little strange that the prequel series would be airing on Netflix and not on Syfy but that could be a good thing for fans who want to see the universe live on.

More from Netflix

As of right now, Black Summer doesn’t share too many ties with its parent series but I’d be surprised if there weren’t some references and Easter eggs for fans of the show embedded in the first season.

Black Summer is set in the early days of the zombie outbreak and stars Jaime King as a mother desperate to find her daughter after they get separated in the chaos.

The good news is, if you’re like me, and haven’t gotten the chance to watch Z Nation, then you should be able to still follow along since this new show is set before it. Based on the trailer it looks plenty gruesome and terrifying.

Plus, since it’s on a streaming site and not airing on cable, that means there aren’t rules or restrictions in terms of the content they can show. I imagine this is going to be a gory ride fans won’t want to miss.

All 8 episodes of Black Summer’s first season are now available to stream on Netflix. Check out the official trailer and synopsis right here:

"Black Summer followers survivors of a cataclysmic event who contend with zombies — and each other — to reach a military evacuation site. Jaime King stars as a mother, torn from her daughter, who embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse."
