Fans are divided over Dean’s actions and attitude in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18. However, like him or not, his character remained consistent and that’s something we should praise.

Supernatural isn’t always consistent. There are times in later episodes that you have to question actions after events from the earlier years. Castiel goes back and forth between being a sidekick and a soldier and we’ve certainly not always had consistency in some lore. Yet, there’s one thing that has been consistent, even in Season 14, Episode 18, and that’s Dean Winchester.

His attitude in “Absence” certainly left fans divided. Some were on his side, as he shouted at Castiel for keeping one of the biggest secrets in the season. Yet, others could see why Castiel would keep the secret. They were angry at Dean for shouting at Castiel, especially using the words “you’re dead to me.” Granted, the actual scene wasn’t as forceful or as bad as in the trailer, but the words were still harsh.

Yet, whether you like Dean or not, whichever side you’re on, there’s one thing in particular that we should commend the show for. That’s the consistency in how Dean reacts when he’s scared, stressed, and close to grieving. He’s always, always lashed out at people.

We can go all the way back to the first season for when Dean has lashed out. In fact, back then, both brothers did a lot of lashing out when in fear. During the second season, we saw Dean lash out at Bobby after Sam’s death, then we saw him lash out at Bobby again in the fifth season. Dean has lashed out at everybody he views as a cause of the problem while mostly blaming himself, such as Sam during Charlie’s funeral in Season 10 and or for Benny’s decision to remain in Purgatory.

Robert Berens has routinely written some of the strongest episodes of Supernatural, and Episode 18 was no different. He gets into the minds of each of the characters. Keeping the writing and development consistent at all times. This was another one of those cases.

Should Dean learn from his mistakes? Well, yes and no. While he should learn not to lash out, it’s a part of his personality and one that is extremely hard to fight against. It’s the fight or flight mode that kicks in during times of stress and fear. Dean’s is fight and that sometimes means fighting with the people who aren’t really at fault.
