Tonight’s episode of The Resident wasn’t an easy one to watch. It dealt with a sad and disturbing truth about the American healthcare system.

The Resident pulls from the headlines this week as one of the main storylines is in reference to the tragic death of Kira Dixon Johnson. Her story inspired The Resident writing room to try and shed light on real problems plaguing American hospitals, namely that of racial bias and maternal mortality rates.

It was a sad week all around, here are the four most devastating moments from Season 2, Episode 20 of The Resident.

4. Conrad and Nic take a step back.

It was highly publicized in the promotional material for this episode yet I was still hoping it wouldn’t come to that. Nic and Conrad can’t seem to get on the same page regarding where they want their relationship to go. Conrad wants them to progress to the next step and Nic isn’t sure if she’s ready for that, or if she ever will be. They finally talk to one another but I felt like neither was really listening to the other.

For now, they’ve decided to go back to being friends and co-workers at Chastain. It’s not an “official” break up per se, but it’s certainly moving towards that direction unless something drastic happens soon. I have an icky feeling in my gut that the Alec/Nic relationship may move forward before season’s end. Honestly, if Alec wasn’t so relentless in his pursuit of Nic and had better chemistry with her, maybe I’d be more forgiving of the storyline. As it stands, I hate the idea of it.

3. A shooting puts a mother and son into the hospital.

America is no stranger to senseless gun violence. The doctors point out this latest group of patients is the 10th case they’ve had this month, in this hospital, in this city, in this state – horrendous statistics. A family is merely driving in traffic as if its an ordinary day when a shooting punctuates their bonding with deadly force. Nic was almost the victim, as she’d been nearby when the incident occurred.

A stroke of luck for the family, since Nic was able to get them taken care of and immediately taken to Chastain. The mother was shot in the heart and the son suffered a spinal cord injury. But they are two of the few patients tonight who receive a happy ending. The dynamic duo of Mina and AJ patches up mom and Kit’s expert hands are able to save her son from a life of paralysis.
