The Curse of La Llorona movie is being promoted as part of the Conjuring Universe, after having watching it, though, I can tell you that it hardly is.

Promoted as the sixth film in the Conjuring series, The Curse of La Llorona is in theaters April 19. Is it worth watching? It depends. Should you see it to keep up with the Conjuring franchise? Not at all. How does the movie tie into the horror universe? We’ve got all the details and answers, below!

Spoiler alert! Although no major plot details will be revealed, light spoilers are ahead if you do not wish to know anything about La Llorona movie until you watch it.

First, let’s talk about the connection between the franchise and The Curse of La Llorona. The latest movie is tied into the rest of the universe by Father Perez, portrayed by Tony Amendola. Anna (Linda Cardellini) goes to Father Perez for questions about La Llorona, and later on in the movie requests his help when she realizes the evil entity is after her children.

More from Movies

You may remember Father Perez from the film Annabelle in 2016. The priest worked on the case of the evil doll, so he tells Anna that this isn’t the first time he deals with an evil presence. Audiences get a quick scene from the movie featuring Father Perez carrying the doll.

That’s the connection. Disappointed? So were we. To make matters worse (spoiler alert once again!), when Anna needs help, Father Perez turns her down. He says he needs to wait until he gets permission from his higher-ups, and that it “can take weeks.” That’s time Anna, regrettably, doesn’t have.

And that’s that! Father Perez tells Anna the story of La Llorona aka “the weeping woman” and then is pretty useless to her and the story.

dark. Next. The Curse of La Llorona star Patricia Velasquez talks keeping the legend alive and the horror genre

This pretty much answers the question of whether you need to watch it to keep up with the franchise. You do not. It provides no extra information about the Warrens or any of the haunted possessions we’ve seen before.

Should you see it anyway? That’s up to you. I certainly don’t recommend it. It’s packed with silly jump scares that don’t work and the ghost of La Llorona looks like a parody at best. What could have been a great ghost story fails to scare even those not into the horror genre.
