NBC’s The Village is moving to a new time for a second time this season. Is it a bad sign for the future of the series?

NBC has certainly kept things relatively quiet. If you haven’t caught recent promos, you won’t realize that The Village is heading to a new time. It’s the second time in as many weeks and doesn’t look good for spring’s feel-good series.

It’s not clear why, but The Village and The Voice are switching timeslots. Instead of running with the unscripted show and then two scripted dramas on Tuesdays, NBC is opting for scripted-unscripted-scripted. The Village kicks things off at 8/7c, then it’s The Voice and then New Amsterdam ends Tuesdays on the network.

More from NBC

The concerning thing is that The Village has already shifted timeslots. Initially taking up the 10/9c timeslot to start after This Is Us Season 3, it moved an hour earlier when This Is Us wrapped for the season and New Amsterdam returned with new episodes. The ratings initially looked good but the last episode took a big hit, dropping 16% in the demo and 7% in the total audience according to TV Series Finale.

Moving an hour earlier isn’t looking good. The first timeslot of the night is highly competitive, with CBS routinely winning the slot. NCIS Season 16 airs in this timeslot and has been strong throughout the season, leading to a Season 17 renewal. The Gifted on FOX already struggled in that slot and has been canceled, so NBC moving freshman show The Village to an hour earlier doesn’t look like the network has much hope for it.

The good news for The Village is that the show’s average is above Good Girls and The Blacklist, which have both been renewed for their third and seventh seasons respectively. If the feel-good spring show can keep the current ratings (and bear in mind that these are live + same day ratings) then there’s a chance that it will land a second season.

However, I still worry about the timeslot change. One timeslot change can be expected but does affect the live ratings. Two moves is a bad sign.
