The Curse of La Llorona premiered in theaters last weekend and is the No. 1 movie in the top 10 at the box office, but is that enough for a sequel?

From the trailers, The Curse of La Llorona simply didn’t look too great. Now that we’ve seen it, we can confirm the movie is a huge missed opportunity to bring such a big legend to life on the big screen. What could have been a great addition to the Conjuring Universe and frightening chapter, failed to impress critics and fans.

At Rotten TomatoesThe Curse of La Llorona has a 33% rotten score and 57% from fans. Still, even with those scores, La Llorona managed to scare its way up to No. 1 at the box office. Clearly, fans have some interest in the weeping woman. Is it enough for this to become a new franchise? Will La Llorona return in a sequel?

For starters, the connection to La Llorona and the rest of the Conjuring Universe is so small, it’s insignificant. Father Perez, a character fans meet in 2016’s Annabelle, appears in La Llorona. He is there to quickly tell Anna (Linda Cardellini) the story of la Llorona. He’s not able to help her out though, so he’s useless.

If you ask me, that’s roughly a connection. So, unless the sequel can find another way to tie it into the Conjuring Universe, I don’t see how a sequel qualifies as part of the growing franchise.

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the movie in theaters!

As far as the story goes, though, a sequel is possible. The enemy (La Llorona) may have been defeated, but the final moments left us wondering if we missed something. Anna stares at a puddle of water on the ground, which makes me think the entity has not been completely eliminated.

Now, let’s look at numbers! At the box officeThe Curse of La Llorona gathered $56.5 million worldwide, $26.5 million of this total domestically, and $30 million overseas. That’s not so bad for a movie put together with a reported budget of just $9 million. It’s actually a win, despite what reviews say.

Knowing all of this, I’d say we shouldn’t be surprise if a sequel is announced in the coming weeks or months. Would I like to see one, personally? Not at all. It doesn’t have a strong enough connection to the Conjuring Universe and, frankly, it’s not a good movie. A sequel would need to make a lot of changes to impress those it failed. What’s your opinion?

The Curse of La Llorona is now playing in theaters.
