On the latest episode of The Flash, the focus shifted from the West-Allen family to spend a little time on Caitlyn Snow and her estranged parents.

In Season 5, Episode 19 of The Flash, the episode starts out with Barry and Iris arguing over sending Nora back to her time. They have this huge argument which could potentially spell doom for their family.

Back at Star Labs, the team figures out what to do about Cicada No.2. They learn that Grace kidnapped her younger self to prevent Team Flash from interfering with her plans. Barry and Detective West do some sleuthing around the crime scene but find no clues as to where they went.

After their brief exchange, the episode flips over to Tannhauser Industries where Caitlyn’s mother is. Carla is going through her daily work when Icicle aka Thomas Snow shows up. He doesn’t say anything to Carla and then steals an experimental cryo-atomizer from her lab. Team Flash shows up shortly after to deal with the fallout.

Caitlyn arrives and doesn’t waste any time in breaking down Icicle’s plan, but it’s for naught. He shows up again, attacking the group inside of the lab. Icicle doesn’t kill anyone but that’s only because Barry races in to stop Joe from being iced.

The problem with Barry’s save is that he goes into a state of hypothermia and can’t wake up. Joe attempts to resuscitate him but unsuccessfully. Barry is about to die when Sherloque shows up with an unorthodox solution to waking him up. He does so but then Team Flash still has an Icicle problem to worry about.

At another decommissioned Tannhauser site, Caitlyn and her mother get into a heated argument about their past. This dredges up all sorts of bad memories, some of which Caitlyn misremembers. Caitlyn becomes slightly unsure of what actually happened and seems to be thinking on the subject, that is until Icicle shows up again. He begins talking about placing Caitlyn through a full transformation so the only thing left is Killer Frost.

Additionally, Icicle intends to erase Carla to create his own “Snow Pack”. He extracts a sample of Caitlyn’s DNA to use on the cryo-atomizer—that way he can manufacture a viable solution to creating more icy family members. Icicle then separates Carla from Caitlyn, placing her in a chamber to become the new Ice Queen.

Caitlyn manages to break out of her cell in time to stop Icicle from completing the process. Unfortunately, Caitlyn’s interruption forces him to sabotage the machine. Carla doesn’t immediately die but she’s left in an extremely compromised position. Lucky for her, Barry Allen shows up to save the day.

Meanwhile, Caitlyn chases after her father’s crazed alter-ego to finally put a stop to the maniacal metahuman. Their fight takes place on ice ramps with them mimicking each other’s moves. Icicle seems to be getting the upper hand until Thomas Snow overcomes his crazed side. It requires that Caitlyn suffer a near-death experience but the moment is enough to break the spell.

The Snow family is reunited shortly after but not for long. Grace/Cicada shows up and attacks them. Killer Frost makes a strong attempt at stopping the villain but she’s not strong enough. Cicada is about to land a killing blow when Thomas throws himself in front of the blade. He dies following the injury.

In the episode’s conclusion, Caitlyn and Carla finally get the chance to hash things over. Not everything is settled but the Snows decide to get coffee—presumably to talk over the unsordid portions of their past. They seem to be getting a second start, that is until the vial of Carla’s DNA turns white, confirming that she’s become a metahuman too. One can only guess when Carla’s alter-ego will show up or if she’ll turn out just like Icicle, but time will tell.

The Flash airs Tuesdays on The CW.
