We’re still trying to sort through all our feelings after THAT emotional #Clace twist in the Shadowhunters finale — and we have important questions.

WARNING:  MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE SHADOWHUNTERS FINALE AHEAD!

Even though the entire series takes place in the course of about 3 months, Shadowhunters Season 3, Episode 22 concluded with a full one-year jump into the future, a future where Shadowhunters and Downworlders are living with an elevated respect for one another and working cohesively to protect each other and mundanes.

A year after their wedding, Alec and Magnus both work in Alicante, where they’ve taken on the roles of the Inquisitor and the High Warlock of Alicante, respectively. We saw that they’re still living in Magnus’ apartment, but it’s unclear whether they travel back to Brooklyn, or if Magnus has magically moved everything to Alicante. At New York, Isabelle deservingly inherited the title of Head of the Institute, with Simon, now an author, still by her side.

Maia had turned The Jade Wolf into Taki’s Diner, an inviting hang-out for all beings in the Shadow World, complete with a menu item in honor of Clary, and Luke is leading a group of deputized Downworlders who work collaboratively with Shadowhunters, and oh, Luke and Maryse are truly living their best lives together.

But after three seasons of just wanting Jace to find happiness, he seemed to be the character who suffered most at the conclusion of Shadowhunters, and we’re not 100% on board with how the story for Clary and Jace played out.

We guess the idea of Jace and Clary getting to build a relationship without the drama from the Shadow World interfering (for once) does seem like a happy ending, but clicking “undo” on the main protagonist’s entire series arc just doesn’t sit well with us. We understand that there wasn’t a lot of time to explain the gritty details of what happened when Clary’s memory of the Shadow World was erased, but we have questions that require answers (for science… and for our sanity).

4 questions we have about mundane Clary in the Shadowhunters finale:

1 – In the moment when Clary lost her final memories of the Shadow World, did she think her mother was still alive?

Jocelyn’s disappearance is what drew Clary into the Shadow World in the first place, so it seems likely that she’d also forget that Valentine kidnapped her mother, or that a demon possessed Alec to kill her. It’s a little unnerving to think that Clary would have gone “home” as a mundane to find her mother had passed… unless the angels gave her alternate fake memories?

2 – Wouldn’t Clary still have Luke and Simon?

At the end of that (amazing) Jace and Simon training scene, Simon makes it clear that he hasn’t been talking with Clary either. We know Luke and Simon were both such a huge part of Clary’s mundane life prior to her 18th birthday, and it’s difficult to believe she would have lost all her mundane memories of them. Was mundane Simon completely erased from her life as well? And with Luke, if she did learn over the course of the year he was now dating Maryse, could Maryse and Clary have a friendship seeing as how Maryse is also a mundane? It’s just too heartbreaking to think about Clary going a full year with no one in her life.

3 – Clary may not have “the sight” anymore, but she shouldn’t she still be able to see and talk with Shadowhunters and Downworlders under the impression that they’re mundanes?

Okay, so we think the loophole here is that Clary feared the angels would make the situation worse if the Shadow World tried to reconnect with her as a mundane, but over the course of the three seasons we’ve seen many instances of mundanes being participants in the Shadow World, interacting with Shadowhunters and Downworlders a like. This season alone we had several instances where new mundanes and lifetime mundanes interacted with this fantasy universe, and surely Clary can grab a drink a Hunter’s Moon like Becky without causing lightning to strike down on New York.

4 – How was Clary able to see Jace at the art gallery?

We’re glad that Clary was able to see Jace at the art gallery, and that there were so many parallels from the Shadowhunters pilot, but we’re curious to know if Jace didn’t correctly glamour himself (unlikely) or if Clary did have “the sight”.
