In honor of their long-awaited comeback, 00’s band the Jonas Brothers are Saturday Night Live’s musical guests this week, but have they visited SNL before?

Most musical artists only dream of being on Saturday Night Live. Now, in its 44th season, the show has featured a lot of talented singers and bands. Aside from a handful of hosts, most artists usually only appear once, maybe twice. Luckily for Jonas Brothers fans, the beloved boy band is making their second appearance this week.

With all the buzz amidst their reunion, being a musical guest on SNL only makes sense. The band appeared all the way back in 2009, at the height of their popularity. In ten years, a lot has changed for both the band and the show. Since it’s their second appearance, it would only be right to look back on their previous visit including their sketches and musical performances.

Back in 2009, seeing the Jonas Brothers on Saturday Night Live was a big deal. While most of us fans held them in high regard, they would mostly be relegated as a “fangirl” thing. In being a musical guest on the show, the brothers could show off their comedic side and give people a different view of who they were. While they were on a musical guest, their sketch was one that fans still appreciate.

Entitled “The Oldest Jonas,” the sketch featured all 3 of the brothers along with host, Alec Baldwin. In the sketch, the band is trying to figure out how they’re going to kick out Gary (Baldwin). Hilarity ensues as Baldwin pretends not to get what they’re alluding to and even makes a few jokes about his “other brothers.” Eventually, the sketch ends with Baldwin leaving and even making a joke about his own name.

While “The Oldest Jonas” is remembered fondly, many forget that the brothers were in 2 sketches. The second was a digital short in which Andy Samberg shared clips of the brothers as a 1980’s hair band. They covered a few popular songs from the era in the clip and eventually admitted it was them. Samberg simply asked how they continued to look so young. While the short had a few funny moments, most remember the latter.

Other than the two sketches, they did perform 2 songs as the musical guest. They performed “Tonight” and “Video Girl”, both from their album “A Little Bit Longer.” There isn’t much to note about said performances, but it is a rare treat for fans. At that point, the brothers had been doing multiple TV performances so the performances weren’t anything too exciting. Most of the excitement came via the audiences and the fans at home.

Regardless, it’s a huge milestone for any artist but especially the Jonas Brothers. They had transcended their Disney fame and reached a larger audience. While it probably didn’t convert any viewers into fans, it was a noteworthy moment in their career. With the band appearing on May 11th, they have the chance to prove that they’re back and better than ever. Additionally, they don’t work for Disney anymore so their sketches could be a bit more adult.

The Jonas Brothers will be on Saturday Night Live on May 11th at 11:30/10:30c.
