After being saved by Netflix last year, Lucifer Season 4 finally dropped last week. There were a couple of references to Supernatural thrown in that you may have missed.

Caution: There are some spoilers for Lucifer Season 4 in this post.

Lucifer Season 4 was finally released on Netflix. While it’s not for all Supernatural fans, it’s certainly something many of us have turned to. Richard Speight Jr. is one of the cast members who got behind saving the show last year when it was unjustifiably canceled by FOX. And possibly to thank our Gabriel for that support, there were a few Supernatural references thrown in.

More from Supernatural

You may have missed them. They were lines that fit in perfectly for the storyline of the episodes. Those who aren’t members of the SPN Family wouldn’t have even noticed they were linked to SPN in some way.

The first one came when Remiel appeared. We found out early on that one of the characters is pregnant with the baby of an angel. Yes, a Nephilim is conceived, although this one doesn’t end up killing the mother like they do in Supernatural. When Remiel appears, Amenadiel questions why she is on Earth — has she gotten fed up of Cassiel’s singing?

And “Cassiel” is the reference. While not exactly Castiel, this is the angel that many fans suspect Castiel’s name comes from. There is no “Castiel” in the Bible or in Christian lore, but there is a Cassiel. I won’t get into the full lore, but just know that this was possibly a reference to our favorite angel in SPN.

The next is a conversation about the name of the half-human, half-angel baby. Amenadiel comes up with plenty of angel names, including Ezekiel, which can be shortened to Zeke. Naturally, Supernatural fans would have thought of the name Gadreel used when he didn’t want to tell Dean Winchester who he really was in the ninth season.

Linda, the human carry the baby, was thinking of a name like…Jack! Yes, Jack! Out of all the human names, opting for this one couldn’t be a coincidence.

What about Michael? Well, no. “Definitely not Michael,” Amenadiel says and it’s clear that he doesn’t like his archangel brother. A reference to how Michael has been downright awful in our series? Possibly!

Of course, Eve showed up, but she’s not the Mother of Monsters that she was in the sixth season of our own show. She did make a reference to Adam (her Adam) and Lilith, who is the Mother of Demons. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got to see the show’s version of Lilith in Season 5, should it be renewed by Netflix.

Having references to Supernatural isn’t out of the ordinary. After all, our own Lucifer once made a reference to Lucifer before it had even aired its pilot episode on FOX. Mark Pellegrino’s character said that if he could, he’d possibly go to L.A. and solve crimes, which is something Tom Ellis’ lead character has done.

It’s always fun when shows connect to each other through references, hinting that people behind the scenes are fans of the other shows. I’ll take this as a thank you for Richard wanting to save Lucifer.
