The season 6 premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left us with plenty of questions. Where is Fitz? Is this person really Coulson? Episode 2 starts to answer those questions.

In the last episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we saw that Fitz was surviving somewhere in deep space. We also saw Coulson come out of a portal leading some sort of alien crew. We know that Jemma kidnapped Quake and the crew to go to a planet she thinks Fitz will be but she was only acting on a hunch. Meanwhile, This alien looks exactly like Coulson but he killed an agent so it’s hard to believe that this being is him.

Catching up

At the start of the episode, our alien crew robs a gas station and learns more about the food, currency, and weaponry on Earth. They’re unimpressed and seem to think it will be easy to get what they want from our planet.

More from ABC

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Mack addresses the team with regard to the death of Agent Fox but he does not discuss the fact that he was killed by a Coulson look-alike. It appears that May might have been the only one who saw his face besides Fox. Dr. Benson seems to think that this could be the return of the Life Model Decoys.

After the meeting, May asks Mack to try to comfort Keller since he was the one who brought Agent Fox in. Mack tells her that he’s pretty sure Keller is going somewhere else for comforting, confirming that he knows about Keller and Yo-Yo.

They find the scene of the store that was robbed and collected some of fake Coulson’s DNA. Dr. Benson is upset because he feels like Mack and May have been holding out on him. He tells them that it would have been nice to know that Coulson had died and been brought back before. The DNA has helped him confirm that they aren’t dealing with an LMD. In fact, the DNA is Coulson’s just corrupted in some way.

In deep space, Fitz has been taken in on board a space ship and is working as an engineer. Eventually, one of the crew figures out that he’s faking being one of them and turns him into the leader. The leader is going to throw him off the ship but he points out that he’s fixed a ton of their issues and then volunteers to work for free when that doesn’t work.

With Fitz pledged into slavery and the other workers’ lack of work being pointed out, the leader of the crew decided to get rid of the other crew members instead. Fitz, of course, can’t live with that and decides to step up to defend them. When the leader is unmoved, Fitz joins them to be ejected into space. The leader calls his buff and is about to toss them all when Enoch opens a door. The leader and his henchmen are sucked out and now Fitz and the engineers are running the ship.

Clues about Coulson

One of the guys in Coulson’s crew asks about his past life while they’re on their next mission. Coulson doesn’t give him anything but this scene makes it seems like it’s possible that this really is him.

Later, during his mission, he tells the big guy on the crew, Jaco, that he’s going to want to replace the other guy. He doesn’t like the way he’s talking. Their second mission is a jewelry store heist though it’s not initially clear what they’re looking for. As they hold up the store, the Coulson character recites a line to the hostage that he used with the gas station clerk earlier. “People fantasize about doing something heroic (dramatic in the gas station heist) in times like these,” while encouraging her not to do it.

They break into the safe but still aren’t finding what they want. Eventually, it’s figured out that they need crystals and the hostage points them to the location of some.

S.H.I.E.L.D. engages Coulson’s crew

For the second time, the team catches up to the aliens; this time during the bank heist. They can’t get into the vault but May gets a hunch and goes back to the shipping yard they had tracked them to. The truck Coulson was driving was cloaked there and May finds it by the abruptly stopping tire marks.

The guy that Coulson was talking about replacing thinks that May is Coulson when he hears a knock on the door of the truck. That’s where she sees that they’ve made some sort of portal from the truck to the vault. She knocks out the smaller guy and then goes toe-to-toe with Jaco.

Once she gets by him she enters the vault, saves the hostage and dispatches the girl pretty quickly but the big guy has now recovered. The hostage flees out of the van which alerts Coulson to the fact that something is going on.

When he enters the truck, May is distracted and stops fighting Jaco. That’s when the girl in his crew moves the portal and quickly pushes May through it.

Rough endings

After getting back on the road, Jaco asks Coulson about the word “Coulson” and what it means. Coulson says he doesn’t know but that it rings a bell. This again leads to the idea of this man being some version of Coulson.

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D., the doctor has found a weird video that seems to show Coulson and his crew destroying a planet.

Out in space, Fitz and Enoch decide that they’re going to go to a planet called Kitson to get the crew jobs with another ship rather than landing on the plant they’re approaching. As the ships floats by on the screen heading to the right, we see Jemma and the crew come out of a portal and go to the left past the same planet we see in the background.

Fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D are very familiar with the storylines involving Simmons and Fitz being separated and quite frankly we could do without another but here we are. Here’s to this one being resolved sooner rather than later.
