Ranking the dragon scenes on Game of Thrones

It’s been a long journey from the Red Waste to King’s Landing, but the dragon scenes on Game of Thrones never fail to excite.

It wasn’t so long ago that Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon were Daenerys Targaryen’s tiny reptile babies, not even capable of producing a single, fiery flame. But oh how things have changed over seven seasons of political intrigue, shifting alliances, and a whole lot of DRACARYS-ing.

Spoiler Alert: We’re gonna torch through every dragon-related spoiler – aka: major Game of Thrones spoilers – through the entire run of the series in this article. If you haven’t watched and would not like to be spoiled, now’s your chance to fly on out of here.

More from Game of Thrones

From their first appearance on the series, the dragons have instilled viewers with a sense of awe and wonder. In the lands of Westeros and Essos, the mythical creatures had been extinct for three centuries before Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) brought them back into the world in a triumphant show of fire and blood. Yet, even after her scaly kiddos came into the world, she had to bide her time and learn how to rule without the power of the dragon.  In a landscape in which political power is often secured through acts of unthinkable violence, Daenerys’s three fiery children were earmarked as a sure thing in helping her eventually conquer Westeros and make all her enemies quake in their boots.

As the baby dragons slowly grew into full-blown weapons of mass destruction, Daenerys conquered Slaver’s Bay while amassing armies, allies, and advisors who would assist her in retaking the Iron Throne in the Targaryen name. During this time, the dragons became a much more prevalent presence in the world of the series. In early years, scenes involving the dragons were sprinkled sparingly throughout the season, whereas in later seasons – specifically seasons 7 and 8 – they began to dominate lengthy scenes in nearly every single episode. Given this evolution, it’s interesting to note that George R.R. Martin was initially reluctant to introduce dragons into his epic fantasy series, but we’re so glad he did.

Throughout the series, the dragon scenes on Game of Thrones have always been a delightful curiosity, never failing to activate viewers’ imagination and adrenaline. So, in a final goodbye to these majestical beasts, we’re counting down every time they graced our screens on Game of Thrones.
