The ending of Jamie’s arc has been a low point in the show’s worst season

After all that, to have Jamie say “Cersei is hateful, and so am I…” was a betrayal, because so much of the on screen evidence contradicts this statement. It betrayed Jamie as a character, fans of Jamie Lannister, and the level of quality Game of Thrones had set for itself.

By having him go back to Cersei  the way it did, the show undid six seasons of rich storytelling. It did this so that Jamie could have a needless fight with Euron Greyjoy. It did this so Jamie could comfort Cersei in her dying moments!? I think Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey give good performances in their final scene together. However, that moment isn’t logical, and most importantly, it didn’t feel earned emotionally. In the end, one of the show’s best stories was brought to an unworthy end.

In fact, this is a prime example of the deep problems Game of Thrones has had since season seven. The show has been rushing too quickly from plot point from plot point, making characters act stupidly or contrary to their previous personalities to do so. The thing that makes this most galling as well, is that they had the raw ingredients to make two special final seasons of TV. Beinhoff & Weiss haven’t stuck the landing for me, and I know there are people even more angry about it then me.

Alas poor Jamie Lannister. I knew him: a fellow deep arrogance and wrath, of deep familial affection. (Too deeply, in the case of Cersei). Where hangs your honour now? Your deeply held principles? Your self-loathing, your wit? It lies along with my hopes for a great season eight.

That being said, I don’t believe that mistakes like how Jamie’s arc ending poorly ruins the entire show. Beinhoff & Weiss, HBO, and Martin’s source material have given six seasons of TV that are pretty great. Even in this scattershot final season, I’ve been finding episodes and moments that have thrilled and entertained me. So they bungled Jamie’s ending.
