Is it really that surprising? The ending to Game of Thrones pulled in its very best audience ever.

HBO has shared the news that its Game of Thrones series finale pulled in the highest ever audience. This is in terms of both linear and the overall live + same day ratings. And it really isn’t all that surprising.

Despite only 10% of TV Time users being happy with the episode, the series finale has been one of the most talked about episodes of the show. It topped the Nielsen social ratings for the week with more than 7,400,000 interactions across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram during the night – the majority of them coming from Twitter.

A series finale tends to be one of the most-watched shows in terms of live + same day ratings of the current season. It can also tend to beat the previous season. Fans want to know how a show they watch (or used to watch) comes to an end. However, it’s not often that a series finale will be the most-watched episode ever.

Game of Thrones has continually grown its audience as each year passes. The year-and-a-half break clearly didn’t hurt this series. Nor did the constant complaints throughout the series – personally, I think some expectations were just a little too high, because going in with absolutely no expectations but plenty of theories made it enjoyable throughout.

According to TVLine, the Game of Thrones series finale pulled in 13.6 million viewers purely on the HBO channel. When looking at every single way a viewer could watch the show through legitimate HBO methods, 19.3 million people watched the episode.

How does this stand up to the previous episodes? Well, “The Bells” set a record with 18.4 million across all platforms and 12.5 million in the single time period. That had been up from “The Long Night,” the Season 8 premiere, and the Season 7 finale (which had previously held the highest rating across all platforms).

It just goes to show that a series may have ended on a low point in terms of viewer satisfaction but it’s still able to end on a high in terms of viewing figures.
