The Game of Thrones ratings from critics and fans are sad to look at
By Sandy C.
The Game of Thrones ratings from critics are in, and they’re pretty depressing to look at. Here are the grades and review totals from both critics and fans.
Loving Game of Thrones nowadays is so difficult. Not because of the way things ended, but how much hate surrounds the series. You can’t go anywhere online without seeing someone comment about how awful they thought the series finale was or a hilarious meme.
In my opinion, the memes are some of the funniest posts online right now, but they still sting because I love Game of Thrones. Well, this feeling is similar when you look at the GoT scores from Rotten Tomatoes.
I’m aware we shouldn’t take Rotten Tomatoes too seriously when it comes to TV and movies. It’s always best to judge content based on your own opinions after watching it for yourself. However, if you want to see up to hundreds of reviews from critics and audiences totalled up into one score, there’s no better place than Rotten Tomatoes.

Seven out of eight Game of Thrones seasons have stellar scores from both fans and the press. Have a look:
- Season 1: 91% from critics, 96%
- Season 2: 96% from critics, 96%
- Season 3: 96% from critics, 97%
- Season 4: 97% from critics, 97%
- Season 5: 93% from critics, 89%
- Season 6: 94% from critics, 93%
- Season 7: 93% from critics, 85%
- Season 8: 67% from critics, 36%
Surprisingly, the biggest drop is from fans and not critics. A 67% score, though still considered “Fresh” on the site, is disappointing to look at compared to all the 90s. But a 36% from fans? Now that’s just depressing.

From both critics and audiences, Season 8, Episode 1, “Winterfell, and Season 8, Episode 2, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” have fairly good ratings at Rotten Tomatoes. They are 92% and 88%, respectively.
Instead of kicking off the final chapter with death and violence, we get character development and story. It’s all downhill from there, though, as far as the majority of viewers are concerned, as ratings descend rapidly.
How do you feel about the final season of Game of Thrones? Were you happy with the character’s fates or did you feel disappointed the series could have wrapped up better with a longer season?
